Bonavita – A Bit About The Brand

Bonavita is a brand that’s become quite the name in the coffee world. They’re a company that boasts about its high quality coffee makers, as well as kettles and scales. With their products being German engineered, there’s a subtle ring of premium quality.

They’re made out of stainless steel and BPA free plastic, and put together with the aim to stand the test of time. It’s not just their build quality that’s up to scratch though, they strive to extract each cuppa optimally.

Brewing at a precise temperature and water flow rate, making a carafe of coffee isn’t just easy, but comes out super flavourful too.

When you compare other brands of coffee makers with Bonavita, it holds up, or even surpasses on quality, brew time, temperature and capacity.

I must let you know though, if you’re after a coffee maker with all the bells and whistles, one that comes with all the gadgets, you should probably look elsewhere.

This isn’t because they’re lower end. Most of the time when you have a coffee maker with lots of features, the quality of the coffee tends to be… meh.

The less electronic gadgets the coffee maker comes with, the less weak points it has. If you’re looking for quality coffee and a coffee maker that’s going to last longer than a couple of weeks, keep on reading.

The Pour Over Brew Method

There are a range of ways to brew your coffee. The Bonavitas mimic the pour-over brewing method, which has been around since 1908, when a German woman named Melitta Bentz invented the coffee filter.

Melitta was so annoyed with the coffee brewing method at the time, which was very messy and resulted in coffee grounds everywhere. One day, after multiple different attempts at making a cleaner cup of coffee, she ripped some blotting paper from her son’s school book.

She then placed the paper on top of an old tin pot she had punched some holes into. You might be able to guess what she did next. She placed some ground coffee and poured hot water over the top. The brewed coffee dripped through the paper, leaving the grounds in the paper and coffee in the carafe.

There’s an important step to the pour-over brew method, called ‘blooming’. You pour hot water over your grounds and let them sit for a moment. The CO2 that is inside the beans is released and the water moves in, starting the extraction process.

The Bonavita does a great job at mimicking this, with it’s pre-infusion technology. This allows for an optimal extraction, creating a super fresh and flavourful brew.

Things You Can Consider When Looking For Your Bonavita

We’ve outlined a couple of things you can be thinking about when looking for your perfect Bonavita.

Brew Time

Having a coffee maker at home that can produce a quick brew is important to some of us. Especially if your morning is already a bit of a rush.

The Bonavitas are by no means the slowest coffee makers out there. They advertise a 6 minute brew time, which I don’t think is too bad.

If a quick brew time is your priority, then I’d recommend looking at Bunn coffee makers. They constantly have a hot water reservoir meaning you don’t have to wait for your water to heat up. Very fast!

Brew Temperature

The optimum temperature to brew coffee is between 195°f and 205°f. Like any good coffee maker, the Bonavita can hold this temperature for the duration of the extraction and brewing process.

The Carafe

There are two options when it comes to what type of carafe you can get. A glass carafe, or a thermal carafe.

Both have their benefits and drawbacks.

With the thermal carafe your coffee is going to stay hot for much longer than it would in the glass carafe. There is a warming plate for the glass carafe, however once that goes off your coffee won’t stay warm for long.

Sometimes there’s a burnt tinge that’s created with a warming plate, but the Bonavita seems to work pretty well with this.

Yes, the glass carafe looks more aesthetically pleasing and you can see how much coffee is left, but the thermal carafe is a little more practical. It’s not going to make much difference to the quality of your coffee, it’s just personal preference.

Brew Capacity

How much coffee do you like to drink?

This is an important question when considering what coffee maker to get. You want something that’s going to brew enough to keep up with you and the rest of your household.

If you don’t drink a huge amount of coffee, still consider the times where you might need a large carafe of coffee. For example when friends or family come over for food. It can be handy to brew one large pot, instead of making several trips.

We’ve included the maximum brew capacity of each coffee maker in our reviews.

What Are The Dimensions?

This may not be something you thought to consider, however it can be important.

There’s nothing worse than receiving your highly anticipated coffee maker, to find out it doesn’t fit on your kitchen counter.

We’ve also included the dimensions of each coffee maker in the reviews. Measure out the space where you’re wanting to keep your Bonavita, just to be sure.

The Best Bonavita Coffee Maker – The Reviews

All Bonavita products come with a 2 year warranty period.

Bonavita Connoisseur BV1901TS 8-Cup Coffee Maker

Key features:

  • 8 cup brew capacity
  • 6 minute brew time
  • Stainless steel thermal carafe
  • 1500-watt heater
  • Dishwasher safe components
  • BPA free
  • Dimensions (H x D x W): 12.2 x 10.8 x 6.2 inches

To kick off the list is the Bonavita Connoisseur, which sounds like it should be a pretty decent coffee maker. It comes with a 1.3L thermal carafe, giving you plenty of room for lots of coffee. Great if you’re going on a long drive or for a picnic with the family.

One stand-out feature is the fact it has a hanging filter basket, which is flat at the bottom. The reason this is a plus is because that way you get a more uniform, even extraction. It also makes the filter basket that little bit easier to clean.

Having an audible signal to let you know when the Bonavita is finished brewing is one of those features you don’t realise is handy. Especially with the first few uses, it’s nice to know for sure that your coffee has finished brewing.

Plus, that beep can be a reminder to put the lid back onto the carafe, to keep your coffee nice and hot. Seeing as though there is no warming plate, this can be the difference between hot coffee, and luke-warm coffee!

Bonavita BV1900TS 8-Cup One-Touch Coffee Maker

Key features:

  • 8 cup brew capacity
  • 6 minute brew time
  • Optional pre-infusion mode
  • Stainless steel thermal carafe
  • 1500-watt heater
  • Dishwasher safe components
  • BPA free
  • Dimensions: 12.4 x 12.2 x 6.8 inches

This Bonavita model is super easy to use, with the one-touch brewing feature. Not only is it easy, it’s fast too, brewing 8 cups in around 6 minutes. It remains at a steady temperature throughout the brewing process for optimal extraction.

There are 3 models that you can choose from. One that comes with a stainless steel carafe, another with a glass carafe instead, or you can go for one that comes in black, instead of the silver. This one also comes with a thermal carafe.

One thing to note if you go for the glass carafe is that there is no warming plate. Therefore if you decide to leave your coffee for half an hour and come back to it, it’s not going to be super hot.

This isn’t a flaw, but it would have been nice to include a warming plate for the glass carafe. If your coffee goes down quickly, this shouldn’t be a problem though.

One thing the Bonavita BV1900TS does really well in is consistency. Yes there’s a lack of fancy gadgets, but it’s all made up for in the quality and consistency of your brew. Providing you do everything else right, like grind your own coffee beans and use fresh water.

Bonavita BV1500TS 5-Cup One-Touch Coffee Maker

Key features:

  • 5 cup brew capacity
  • 4-5 minute brew time
  • Optional pre-infusion mode
  • Stainless steel thermal carafe
  • 1100-watt heater
  • Dishwasher safe components
  • BPA free
  • Dimensions: 12.3 x 10.6 x 6.2 inches

Bonavita provides the option of a small coffee maker for those of us that don’t get through a lot of coffee. Perfect for when there is only one or two people in the house, but still gives you the option to make coffee for friends or family when they come over.

The 5-cup brewer sports the #4 cone-shaped filters. Although arguably not as good for extraction as the flat-bottomed filters, the BV1500TS brews good coffee nonetheless.

The showerhead is also slightly different than the larger 8-cup brewers. It’s been specially designed for an optimum extraction in small batch sizes.

I love how easy the Bonavitas are to use. To activate the pre-infusion mode to allow the ground coffee to bloom, all you need to do is hold the switch in for 5 seconds while the machine is off. Again to reverse the action. It’s very simple.

It makes a fantastic pot of coffee, and coming with a price tag that’s very reasonable, I don’t think you’ll find more bang for your buck.

Bonavita BV1901PW Metropolitan One-Touch Coffee Maker

Key features:

  • 8 cup brew capacity
  • 6 minute brew time
  • Optional pre-infusion mode
  • 1560-watt heater
  • Glass carafe
  • Warming plate
  • BPA free
  • Not dishwasher safe
  • Dimensions: 12.6 x 12.2 x 6.8 inches

Last but not least we have the very stylish BV1901PW. I really like the design of this one. It sets it apart from the other Bonavitas we’ve looked at. With the glass carafe, it’s certainly not going to be an eye-sore on your kitchen counter.

It comes with a warming plate which is good because of the glass carafe. It stays on for 40 minutes after you’ve brewed your coffee, before turning itself off, which is useful if you’re a little forgetful.

The quality of coffee is really good too. It comes with the flat bottom filters allowing for a balanced extraction.

You get a beautiful looking coffee maker, that brews a beautiful cuppa joe, all for a good price. There aren’t many coffee makers around that tick those boxes.

Final Words

Bonavita is a good brand when it comes to coffee makers. No, it might not be one of the biggest brands but they brew delicious coffee and their products are pretty solid.

The fact the warranty period is 2 years shows they don’t think their products are going to break after a couple of uses. Although there are longer warranty periods, like Bunn coffee makers, for the cost I don’t think you can go wrong.

I’d recommend going for the Bonavita Connoisseur BV1901TS 8-Cup Coffee Maker. It’s one of the newer models from Bonavita and allows for a decent amount of coffee to be brewed.

If you haven’t found your ideal coffee maker yet, don’t fret, we have lots more reviews for you to check out.
