10 Best Sitcoms to Binge Without Terrible Laugh Tracks

Laugh tracks are great – they make the joke even funnier and act as a fill-in on the show, occupying a lot of would-be awkward pauses. Plus, sometimes, without it, the character seems silly doing whatever they do on the screen.

Still, we must admit, it gets overboard sometimes or is not needed – it can feel like they're commanding the audience to laugh when the joke should sell itself, right? Some people (like me) love listening to the sound of people laughing when the character does or says something goofy.

And others would prefer the show without the sound of “fake” laughter intercepting every minute. If you're one of those people, these shows will excite you!

1. The Good Place (2016 – 2020)

The Good Place is a fantasy comedy series created by Michael Schur that aired on NBC. It was sitcom fans' number one voted response, and many people showed excitement for it.

The series follows a woman's life after she enters “the good place,” which is a Heaven-like utopia, as a reward for her righteous life. Only she wasn't a good person, and there was a mistake (who says there are no mistakes in Heaven?), and now she has to hide her past.

2. It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia (2015 – Present)

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia is an American sitcom that follows a group of friends who call themselves “The Gang,” running an unsuccessful bar in South Philadelphia. A fan calls it a goldmine.

They wrote, “It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia is an actual goldmine that will keep you laughing the entire 15 seasons. It's pretty straightforward, with no real slang per se. Just a group of friends who own a bar and get up to various high jinks. They're all pretty morally bankrupt characters.”

3. Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013 – 2021)

Here is another one fans call “pure gold.” Also called B99, Brooklyn Nine-Nine takes place in the fictional 99th Precinct of the New York City Police Department in Brooklyn. The series follows the exploits of a group of detectives led by the brainy commanding officer Captain Raymond Holt.

And if you're not a fan of comedies, this may be the show for you. According to a fan, “it is pretty straightforward, but there are a lot of pop culture references.”

4. Shrinking (2023 – Present)

You can't go wrong with Harrison Ford (rhymed better in my head).

Shrinking is a comedy-drama about a therapist battling depression – quite ironic. To deal with it, he does what every therapist advises their patients; he talks about it. By saying his unfiltered thoughts to his patients, he changes their lives – and his.

“Haven't laughed out loud this hard since Arrested Development,” someone says.

5. You're The Worst (2014-2019)

You're The Worst is a comedy-drama series created by Stephen Falk. It follows the story of a selfish writer and a reckless PR executive who decide to try romance after they meet at a wedding. Sounds catastrophic, huh?

One commenter adds an interesting detail: “I love You're the Worst. It has one of the best representations of mental illness, IMO.”

6. Trailer Park Boys (2001 – 2008)

Trailer Park Boys is a Canadian mockumentary sitcom by Mike Clattenburg and a continuation of his 1999 film. It centers on the misadventures of three residents living in the fictional “Sunnyvale Trailer Park” in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Despite their plan to evade the police while committing petty crimes, they always end up in jail, with their plans ending in failure.

U/WillNeighbor's advice? “Give it a chance and let yourself love all the characters in time.”

7. Modern Family (2009 – 2020)

Here's one of those series whose reputation speaks for them.

Modern Family is a mockumentary-style family sitcom that follows the lives of three different families, conceived when the creators were discussing real-life experiences. Modern Family is highly acclaimed by critics and is still regarded as one of the finest television series.

This series features a second-grade teacher determined to help her students despite the harsh conditions of underfunded schools in the black community. Tyler James Williams of Everybody Hates Chris is one star of this show.

And if you're worried it's a little slow, according to someone, “it gets really fun halfway into the first season once everyone is more established.”

9. Ted Lasso (2020 – Present)

The series follows Ted Lasso. Lasso is a college football coach recruited to coach a fictional Premier League soccer team, even though he has no real experience coaching. But he is part of a larger revenge plot. His employer hired him, hoping he would fail so she could get back at her ex-husband.

User AnnieAnnieSheltoe says, “Ted Lasso is phenomenal, and I promise, you don't need to like sports to love the show.”

10. Silicon Valley (2014 – 2019)

According to internet sources, this is an American comedy series featuring Richard, a programmer who creates the Pied Piper app and tries to get investors. Meanwhile, five other programmers struggle to make their mark in Silicon Valley.

Fans and critics praised its writing and humor.
