History

Metlife can be traced back all the way to 1868 to underwrite the lives and limbs of Union soldiers during the Civil War. The company went through some trouble getting started because it was difficult ensuring the bloodiest war in the U.S history. That’s when they decided to petition the New York legislature to allow the company’s charter to sell life insurance to civilians as well. The company changed its name to National Life and Travelers’ Insurance Company in 1865 and underwent two reorganizations within a period of two years. They split their life and casualty lines into separate companies in 1866, National Life Insurance Company and National Travelers’ Insurance Company. On March 24, 1868, National Travelers’ Insurance Company was reorganized as Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. In 1869, $614 million worth of life insurance has been written in the United States, of which Metropolitan has written 2,930 policies valued at $4.86 million. By 1886 Metropolitan had more than $100 million of industrial life insurance in force and the company expanded quickly during the 1880’s. In 1913, Metropolitan was authorized to write accident and health insurance and in 1914 they wrote their first group accident and health Policy to their own employees. On January 6, 1915, they completed the process and changed themselves from a stock life insurance company owned by individuals into a mutual company operating without external shareholders with the benefit of their policyholders.  It wasn’t until 2000 when Metropolitan Life Insurance Company launched their seventh-largest IPO ever held in the United States.

Giving Back

Just like other big box life insurance companies, Metlife takes great pride in their community involvement. Metlife believes that by recognizing the importance of volunteers and the impact they have on helping others can help lead better lives. Metlife employees around the world donate their time and talents to help youth develop literacy skills and helps teach students the importance of financial responsibility. In 2015 alone, Metlife employees provided over 72,000 volunteer hours. They are proud of their employees as they volunteer for many different organizations. Metlife’s employees volunteer with Kiva, which is a program that directs microloans to low-income borrowers and Taproot Foundation which helps the volunteers share their expertise to help non-profits solve challenges. They also volunteer with Dress for Success which lets clients strengthen their resumes and help build interviewing skills. Metlife’s employees volunteer in other organizations and programs but we figured we could stop here.

Review/ Rating 2017

Metlife was named the No. 4 “world’s most admired” life insurance company by Fortune in 2016. They offer Term life, Whole life, Universal life, and Variable life. Not only do they provide a wide variety of products but they also have high ratings. According to A.M Best Metlife has an “A+” rating also known as superior. Fitch ratings also rate Metlife an “AA-” and Moody’s Investors rates Metlife an “Aa3”. These ratings are phenomenal but don’t let that be the only reason why you decide to buy coverage from this company. Always try to shop around to make sure you find the best deal just like you would shop around when it comes to cars do the same with life insurance.

What do these ratings mean?

Most life insurance companies sought out to be rated by one of the four most well-known rating agencies to show their strengths and weaknesses. A.M Best, Fitch, Moody’s, and Standard & Poor’s are the four most well-known rating agencies. These ratings show how financially stable the company is and is very important to look at when shopping for life insurance because it gives you an idea on how well they can handle their money. If a company has a bad or low rating then they are more than likely vulnerable and if disaster strikes (which can happen because disasters are inevitable) then that company who received a low rating will reflect that in the way they handle the disaster. If the market were to crash that same company would be weighing out their options of pulling out or filing bankruptcy, either way, all those premiums you have paid to that day will be gone with the wind. While an “A” rated company stands tall and strong because they have prepared for these times and are executing everything the right way. That is why it is important to look into a company’s rating.

Products

Like we mentioned before Metlife offers Term life, Whole life, Universal life and Variable life. Before we go into what these products offer we would like to make sure that everyone is on the right page by defining these terms. Term life insurance is a form of temporary life insurance and is only available for a specified period of time, you can still get death benefits but cash value will not be built with this type of life insurance. Whole life insurance is a type of permanent life insurance and it provides death benefits and also allows you to build cash value. Universal life is also a type of permanent life insurance that also offers death benefits and allows you to build cash value, the only difference between whole and universal is that universal allows for more flexibility to fit your changing needs. Variable life is also a form of permanent life insurance that provides death benefits and cash value but also gives you an opportunity of investment options.

Just like other companies, Metlife has their own set of unique underwriting techniques.  While many other companies deny coverage for the uninsurable Metlife offers them coverage. If you are 40 and under with a blood pressure of 130/80 you can still qualify for the best rates also known as preferred rates or standard rates if your blood pressure is 145/90. You can also get insured by Metlife if you haven’t had a DUI within the past five years which is fantastic because most companies deny once they hear the client has had a DUI. If you haven’t used nicotine within the past five years and have a negative urine test for nicotine you can still qualify for the best nonsmoking rates. If you do not have a history of alcohol or drug abuse within the last 15 years you can qualify for the preferred rate.

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, Metlife is one of the most well-known life insurance companies with their snoopy character everywhere. They are a highly rated company with various products to offer and niche underwriting techniques. However, it is always a good idea to shop around because this company may seem nice and gravy but you may be offered a better rate or quote elsewhere. Take some time and read some more reviews, if you don’t have time contract an independent life insurance brokerage (like us) to help you compare companies.
