An iPod, a phone, and an internet communicator.”

Not three devices, but just one – the iPhone.

Made available to the public in June 2007 the Iphone was intended to ‘reinvent the phone’. The revolutionizing product has grown (literally) ever since, and on 26th July 2016, Apple sold its billionth iPhone.

The mobile industry has been a very competitive, and the iPhone with its elegant combination of metal, glass, plastic and wonderful software has always managed to shake the market and challenge its competitors.

The iPhone has grown from a 3.5-inch screen to a 5.5-inch screen in the last 9 years, and to supplement this growth, it has also had some major software updates.

The iPhone

The first phone introduced by Apple, known for its touch screen and the ‘home’ button.

iPhone 3G

A little thicker than its predecessor, the iPhone 3G came in with better storage, 3G connectivity, and built-in GPS service. The only major drawback of this device was the decrease in its battery life.

iPhone 4

Launched in 2010, the iPhone 4 was a major game changer. It came in with Apple’s A4 processor, a Retina display and also Facetime. The hardware was completely redesigned to have a sleek look with a combination of stainless steel and glass.

Iphone 4s

The iPhone 4s had improvements in software and introduced Bluetooth 4.0 too. The major breakthrough for this mobile was the introduction of the voice- activated assistant SIRI!

iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 came in with major hardware changes, since its introduction in 2007. Introduced in 2012, the iPhone 5 was taller and sleeker than the previous models. The screen size increased, and changes in visual design were also made. The 30-pin dock connector was finally replaced with a reversible 8-pin connector, which Apple called ‘Lightning’. Changes in the rear- camera, now enabled users to click panorama pictures.

iPhone 5c

Introduced alongside iPhone 5s, it was the first time Apple introduced a range of colours for its mobile handsets – blue, green, yellow, pink and white. With minor improvements in software, and with the introduction of a polycarbonate case, the iPhone 5c was designed to be a cost-reduced iPhone 5.

iPhone 5s

The TouchID was introduced in the iPhone 5s. Known as the Most Forward –Thinking Smartphone in the World, it came in with features that were not for immediate consumer use but laid the foundation for future improvements.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6Plus

Taller and wider, the iPhone 6 went back to rounded edges that were known to the first iPhone. Apple introduced ‘Apple Pay’ with iPhone 6 and 6Plus. These handsets were thinner than ever before, and the power button was moved from the top to the right side of the case. The dramatic increase in the dimensions of iPhone 6Plus, helped Apple enter the ‘Phablet’ market.

iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus

These handsets can be viewed as Apple’s way to correct errors that were found in the iPhone 6 and 6Plus.  Apple improved the durability of these mobiles, which added to the increase in weight. There was no improvement in screen resolution, but iPhone 6s and 6s Plus came in with the 3D Touch – a feature that was previously found in Apple Watch, MacBook, and MacBook Pro.

In 2016, Apple introduced the iPhone SE, which can be seen as a replacement for iPhone 5s. It does not offer the features like the iPhone 6 but comes in a more compact size.

Over the years, Apple has managed to change the technological market and has delivered the best-of-the- best products to its users. From starting in a garage to becoming the most desired workplace by employees, Apple has definitely come a very long way.
