Okay guys, the wonderful and my personal favourite film, Jolly LLB’s sequel that is Jolly Llb 2’s trailer is out.
The film stars Akshay Kumar, Huma Qureshi and Anu Kapoor in lead roles and even has the much loved judge Saurabh Shukla from the first film back on.
Now before I get on to my reaction of the trailer, I do want to say that the trailer is definitely not bad and perhaps if the film was not a sequel and instead was a stand alone, I would have for sure liked it much more than I do right now.
The film directed by Subhash Kapoor who also directed the original, is centered on the same premise as the earlier one wherein a small time and mostly unsuccessful lawyer gets in entangled into something much bigger than him and finally realizes his true potential.
Same Formula, Different Names?
One thing that I was anyways skeptical about from the time a sequel was announced was how the makers of the film will keep the sequel different without running into the same formula trick just with different actors.
Because this is something that happens a lot in sequels, and unfortunately, Jolly LLB 2 is also going in the same vein.
I can tell from just the trailer that the only thing different about the film would be its actors and the budget. When it was Arshad Warsi the film had a more indie vibe and was better able to capture the small town feel.
However since this time they have been able to get a top commercial star, all that seems to have been waylaid to the side in favour of bigger sets, more drama and of course songs.
Sorry, But The Casting Is Just Not Working Here
Actually more than anything the thing that bothered me the most was that the trailer just felt like it was lacking the charm that the original movie had.
Instead it seemed to want to capitalize on that only with shots of a familiar face aka the Judge Tripathi, played by Shukla, and even the jokes and bits were just falling flat for me.
Where the casting was just perfect in the first one, Warsi actually looked like a newbie lawyer who was yet unaware of the politics of the law industry, Boman Irani was absolutely perfect as the high profile, eloquent and dignified lawyer.
Both the actors had a strong grip of what their character demanded, whereas in this one, Akshay Kumar is fine I guess, but Anu Kapoor as the rich and prominent lawyer?!
Are you kidding me?
And one more thing, Irani while portraying the classy lawyer stayed in character, he never deviated from it. But Anu Kapoor suddenly starts to speak in this weird local way of speaking out of nowhere?
Why so guys?
Anyways, signing off I would just like to say that, Jolly LLB worked for a couple reasons all of which the sequel cannot use, unfortunately.
