Que te pasa Clarin?

Yeah, I know, you might be wondering, “What the heck is Nick talking about in his headline?”
The phrase actually happened to be one of the most-talked-about in Argentina in the weeks leading to the June 28th mid-term that left the Kirchner’s government without majority in Congress.
The “guy” who said it was Nestor Kirchner, former President of Argentina, and husband of the current President, Cristina Fernandez. It was directed at the most powerful media group in the country, Grupo Clarin (GCLA AR).
So yes, it’s kind of Barack Obama talking, the term you’re guessing, about Fox News…
What does all of this have to do with the markets in Argentina?
Well, it was announced this past week that the national soccer association (AFA as it is known) has canceled the 268 MM Argentine pesos-a-year contract with Television Satelital Codificada (TSC), which run through 2014, and instead signed a deal with the state television channel.  How much will the contract cost the Argentine state? 600 MM ARS  a year. Where’s the money coming from? Advertising revenue.
Now, what does this all have to do with Grupo Clarin? Well, Clarin happens to control 50% of TSC, the company which owned the rights to broadcast the entirety of the matches of the Argentine Premier League.
Grupo Clarin also owns 100% of Artear, the leading TV channel in the prime-time, 100% of Radio Mire, one of the leading radio stations, 60% of Cablevision, the main cable operator in Argentina, and Diario Clarin, the newspaper with the highest circulation, among other companies.
Clarin is owned 71% by its Argentine controlling shareholders (Ernestina de Noble, founder of the newspaper, Hector Magnetto, Jose Antonio Aranda and Lucio Paglietto), 9% by Goldman Sachs’ investment funds, and has a 20% free float.
Grupo Clarin trades in both the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange, as a Global Depositary Receipt (GDS).
The day after the AFA announced it was breaking the contract with TSC, Grupo Clarin’s share was down 0.8% in Buenos Aires trading.
