Thanks to an unexpected request made by the attacker, Tornado Cash governance token holders will soon recover authority over the protocol’s functioning. With this newfound power, the community may drive the protocol toward repair and increased safety.

On May 26th, the proposal to return power to the original Tornado Cash Governance Token holders was approved. There were a total of 517,000 symbolic votes cast in favor of the plan, with zero against it. Thankfully, the protocol itself was unaffected by this resolution, although it did result in the theft of some governance tokens.

An attacker gained control of the protocol’s governance mechanism and cast 1.2 million votes for a fraudulent proposal.

Taken Aback by Unexpected Act

Using this massive sway of the vote, they pushed through other proposals and eventually took control of the governance tokens. Because of their strategies, they were able to influence the power structure and gain control.

Only a few hours after the breach, the attacker contacted the Tornado Cash community with a startling suggestion, ostensibly aimed at regaining control of the cryptocurrency’s governance. Many people were taken aback by this unexpected act, which piqued their interest and led them to investigate the perpetrator further.

The hacker made off with 483,000 Tornado Cash (TORN) tokens, as revealed by Martin Lee, a data journalist from the crypto analytics site Nansen.

After that, they engaged in a string of swaps whereby they exchanged $890,000 worth of stolen tokens for 485 ETH. They were able to walk away with 39,000 TORN, or around $160,000, thanks to their cunning plan.
