What Items Should You Look for In Jewelry Shop Auctions?

If you look for business liquidation auctions in your area, you will find an interesting variety of businesses that are closed and that have hired auction firms to liquidate their equipment and supplies.

In a recent search, we found auctioneers that were liquidating exercise equipment from health clubs . . . ice cream freezers from scoop shops . . . welding equipment from a muffler shop . . . and stoves from a pizzeria.

But you’ll be interested to hear that we also found auction listings for two retail Jewelry stores that were selling not only display cases but also supplies that were used to manufacture and repair jewelry. If you invest in precious metals, materials like those spell opportunity!

If jewelry stores in your area have closed, here are some items to look for in liquidation auctions. . .

  • Old costume and other jewelry – We’ll start with these, the most obvious items to look for. And remember that even inexpensive Gold-plated rings, necklaces, and other items often contain gold that a qualified precious metal refinery can reclaim for you.

  • Gold-plated, gold-toned, and karat gold chains – These are sometimes found in small zip-closure bags or on cardboard spools. They too can contain gold that is worth reclaiming.

  • Gold, silver, and platinum wire – These materials are used to make and repair all kinds of jewelry. They are also used as solder to repair broken pieces of jewelry. Again, don’t overlook the fact that they can contain precious metals that are worth money.

  • Jeweler’s findings – These are the small clasps, rings, hooks, and other pieces of hardware that are attached to the end of chains. Most of those you will find will be made of silver and therefore, worth no more than a few cents. But you could find some that are gold-plated, so be on the lookout for them.

  • Soldering fluxes – These are pastes that are brushed onto silver and gold items before they are soldered together. Most all fluxes – even those that are used in brazing – contain silver. Are they worth much money? No, but in sufficiently large quantities, they are worth snapping up.

  • Gold and silver powders – These are sometimes used to apply a thin new layer of gold, silver or even platinum atop older items of jewelry. You’ll find them in jars, so don’t pass them by.

  • Display signs and promotional items More often than not, signs and other promotional items that were found in jewelry stores do not contain precious metals. However, they can be collectible! For example, a collector might be willing to pay you $100.00, $200.00 or more for a jewelry store sign that advertised Rolex watches or other high-end items. If you can snap them up at liquidation prices, we would encourage you to do so.
