Will People Ever Stop Hiding their Personal Treasure?

Will People Ever Stop Hiding their Personal Treasure? Not Likely. Here’s Where to Look

It has been a while since we have written a post about finding hidden treasure. But today, we would like to explore the topic again.

Why? Because news stories about finding buried treasure never seem to go away. A treasure was found about a year ago near Santa Fe that was buried decades ago by an eccentric man named Forrest Fenn. People have been searching for this hidden box of gold for decades. And the search was clearly worth the effort. The man who found it reported that the box contained gold and jewels valued at more than $1 million.

In the last few years, hidden treasure, usually buried, has been found in the United Kingdom too. It’s been found in Egypt and Scandinavia. It seems that the desire to bury or otherwise Hide large amounts of Valuable items is not about to go away. But why do people bury treasure? And what are your chances of finding it?

Why People Hide Valuables

There are many reasons. Let’s face it. Sometimes people hide gold, silver, jewels and other valuables because those items have been stolen. But that is only one reason people hide caches of valuables. Here are some others . . .

  • Protection from theft. This is perhaps the greatest reason why people hide valuable items in their homes. They are afraid that if their homes are robbed, thieves will carry off their most valuable possessions.

  • Concealment from heirs and family members. Some people simply do not want their children or other family members to know about the valuables they own, so they conceal them. The problem is that this strategy does not work if the owner dies or becomes incapacitated.

  • A desire to avoid paying estate taxes. This strategy too can backfire if the owner of the valuables passes away. Heirs who want to continue to hide those assets and who do not mention them when taking possession of them as part of an estate usually only compound their financial difficulties. Hiding assets from the government is a strategy that does not work.

  • Sheer eccentricity. Let’s face it. People who hoard valuables are sometimes just a bit crazy . . . or very eccentric. They hide valuables because they like the feeling of simply owning them, or of concealing their wealth from others. Again, the result can be that at the time they pass away, those personal treasures go unfound. Or their heirs are in for a happy – or unhappy – surprise when those valuables are found.

Where to Look for Buried and Other Hidden Valuables

  • In homes, look behind false walls and partitions . . . under loose floorboards . . . under stairs . . . behind loose bricks and blocks in foundations . . . under cement floors . . . in ductwork . . . in hollow banister posts . . . in drains and other pipes . . . and even inside fireplace flues.

  • In furniture, look under false bottoms in drawers . . . in panels on the backs of drawers that create hidden storage areas . . . and in hollow legs or other features.

  • In yards, look down wells . . . under patios . . . under large rocks . . . and underground (a Metal detector can be your best friend in your hunt).

  • In open areas, look for raised areas that are visible to the naked eye or to drone-mounted cameras . . . around the foundations of old buildings . . . near the walls that surround cemeteries . . . and again, take your metal detector with you as you explore.

  • In churches, schools, factories, and all other non-residential buildings look in all the places we describe above.
