How to Save Money on Your Favorite Books

Tags: book

In an effort to become more intentional about my reading habits (& to decrease my Netflix binging habits) I created a book goal for 2019. Being the budget-gal that I am, that means I’ve been on the hunt for all the book deals. I’ve found a few that I really, really love and I can’t wait to share them with you!

Amazon Kindle

So this one is kind of one of those things where you splurge a little money upfront to save more later. (And to just make your life so great over all.)

I got a Kindle for my birthday and I ADORE IT. I know there is so much charm in having a real, paper book to hold but my Kindle has been a game changer! First of all, the fact that it’s waterproof so I can read in the tub, and LED so I can read in bed without disturbing my husband is amazing. But the real kicker is that Kindle Books are SO MUCH CHEAPER.

There are all kinds of deals and promos for free books all the time, and I’ve legitimately never spent more than $2 on a Kindle book. Now, obviously if you want a super popular, top-seller, you’re going to be paying pretty close to full price… but you’re still going to be getting a deal. If you’re down for some lesser known books and authors (who typically still rock,) you can stock a whole virtual library for next to nothing.

I’ve linked one of the fancier Kindles in this post, but don’t let that price overwhelm you. There are less tech-y & older versions that can still get you everything you need for way cheaper. Shop around till you find one you love!

BookBub.com

This one is also for my ebook lovers, so if you’re a paper copy kind of reader, you may want to skip ahead.

Unless you want tons of book options for $1.99 or less!

Yes, you heard me right. This site searches for book deals going on and gives you tons and tons of book suggestions – that are almost all priced under $2. Some are even free! The site lets you select books and genres you love and then sends you daily bargain ideas customized to your taste. (Or if you hate emails you can always opt out of that option.)

You can download them straight to your Kindle or wherever you read ebooks. Bookbub helps me find cool books I wouldn’t have likely found elsewhere, like Before We Met by Lucie Whitehouse.

You can purchase it on Amazon by clicking the photo above or you can search it on BookBub to see if the deal is still going on! (This book was filled with unexpected turns and the ending truly blew my mind.)

Local Library

Maybe it’s crazy that I even have to say this one, but in this day and age, real life libraries are sometimes easily forgotten! A library card to your local library is a cheap (and often free) way to have a limitless supply of books.

And sometimes, your local library will have awesome deals with ebook providers! In Louisville, if you have a library card, you can get tons of free books for your Kindle!

Half Priced Books

Half Price Books will forever be one of my favorite stores. My husband and I often take date nights to our local HPB just to roam around and explore titles.

You can find a huge supply of discounted, used books at HPB, and they’re almost always stocked full of current best sellers, classics, and lesser known titles.

Plus, you can sell books, DVDs, games, & CDs to HPB so you have money for new ones!

(It’s actually one of my favorite, little side-hustles. You can see more about side-hustles I do to bring in extra cash every month here or here.)

If there isn’t a Half Price Books near you you can shop their deals online, too!

Swap and trade with friends.

Many of the books I read are recommendations from friends. And many of the recommended books I read are also borrowed from said friends. Find you some good friends or co-workers who love to read as much as you do and share good books together! Make it known you’re willing to lend yours out and be sure to ask your friends to return the favor.

Online search for great deals.

Sometimes it’s truly that easy! Google book deals and see what kind of online coupons you end up with!

Search Amazon and Ebay for discounted books.

I truly can’t remember the last time I paid full price for a book. If I can’t find it through any of the above means, Amazon or Ebay always have my book. You can get new and used books from the sellers online for way less than full price. This is always my go-to when I need a physical copy of a specific book to give as a gift!
