India Couture Week 2017: From paintings to the runway, Varun Bahl creates magic

Varun Bahl’s couture collection for the India Couture Week 2017, is an inspired one. Chezh Art Nouveau painter AlphonseMucha’s pieces like the Le Pater (1889), The Seasons (1896), and The Flowers (1898) have been brought to the stage by the auteur in his latest collection called the ‘Dream Nouveau’.

As the name suggests Varun Bahl takes inspiration from the art movement from the turn of the 20th century. Motifs borrowed from the floral patterns of the period with intricate patterns embroidered on traditional bridal outfits. There is an interplay of patterns whether it is asymmetrical lines, floral motifs or curvilinear patterns in the ensembles.

The colour palette is ranges from ivory, pale pink, peach, burnt orange, pistachio, red to old rose that are incorporated in lehengas, jacket anarkalis, draped sarees, etc. For menswear the designer had long and short bandhgala jackets and sherwanis teamed with heavy draped dupattas embroidered with minute detailing. The shoes and plain churidar pants went along with the sherwanis.

There were long gowns in the mix, some with loose interesting silhouettes, or with embroidered capes draped over the shoulders to finish the look. There were cold shouldered blouses and belted mid waisted clinched draped floor length dresses.

About the collection, Varun said, “Through this collection we, have tried to recreate a magical sequence of designs tonight. With Art Nouveau being the inspiration, we have tried to enhance the artistic elements with ornamentation and silhouettes with classic cuts. Each and every design was catered to carefully and was created by blending poetry and fantasy to transport the audience to a dreamy atmosphere.”

p.s check out those clutches. So drool-worthy and I am coveting one so much.
