Jab Harry Met Sejal ‘Mini Trails’ review: Apparently changing the game … not

The title of ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ irked me. I get it. One would want to bring back the charm of the blueprint of all modern romantic comedies – When Harry met Sally to the big screen again and it might work. But can’t our filmmakers be a tad bit more original? Apparently rumour has it that Ranbir Kapoor suggested the final title and won a bet against Shah Rukh. The brainstorming session for something as important as that was resolved over a bet then. Hmmm.

This venture by Imtiaz Ali was being highly anticipated by the fans. What with Superstar Shah Rukh Khan not really making it big at the Box Office off late and Anushka Khan and his pairing has been quite successful in the past with ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ and ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. I fail to understand why those films were so successful… I couldn’t sit through the entirety of either of them. Huge plot holes, and chiched cheesy films. very average music. It worked at the BO, so one is not allowed to complain.

The three ‘mini trails’ of ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ that have released so far have been interesting to watch. Shah Rukh has a great comic timing and his rattling off of the dialogues with not a second to breathe are funny. Hopefully they will remain funny when people actually watch the movie and the best moments have not just been crammed into the trailers.

Trail 1

SRK is Harinder Singh Nehra, therefore Harry, while Anushka plays Sejal (with a pronounced Gujarati accent). The banter between the two lead characters is endearing and yes, the trailer did leave me wondering what the plot of the film is. One can only guess that it might be ‘no strings attached’ kind of deal. The final outcome is predictable and I don’t think I need to spell it out here. Hopefully there won’t be an airport scene.

Trail 2

Imtiaz is known for his romantic drama/comedies in the past and this film might just be an extension of the kind of cinema he makes. For what it’s worth, Ali’s movies don’t leave you with a bad taste, sometimes though he can get overboard with the mush too.

Trail 3

Actors Sayani Gupta and Evelyn Sharma would also be seen in the film. Shot in Prague, Amsterdam, Lisbon and Budapest, one hopes that the film does not end up being a video montage for these tourist destinations and has a little more substance. The film is set to release on August 4, 2017.
