Summer Fashion is so much fun. Not only does one have the option of trying all sorts of colours, but this is a time when all the dresses and the short skirts can come out of the closet. But as trends change with each season, it is easy to fall behind. The bigger problem arises when you don’t know what to buy for the Summer season with so many designs and brands available in the market.

Fashion Stylist and Consultant Nidhi Sharma will help you overcome the challenge and dress up in the HOTTEST trends this summer. Read on…

Tell me about yourself and your career so far, how did you become a fashion stylist?

I used to be a fashion writer and assistant and I grew around fashion. I was attracted to styling naturally as I started experimenting while assisting renowned fashion stylists during fashion shoots at the time. Having studied about textiles, and fabrics in college all this came easily to me. I also got a styling diploma from National Institute of Fashion Technology in the interim.

My career so far has been a journey of travel, experiences and lessons learnt.

Do you focus on trends or the personal style of your clients? Where do you get your inspiration from?

I do follow trends as it is important for my job. But more importantly I like being a personal shopper and stylist for real life people. Rather than focusing on trends all the time I try finding some point of authentic inspiration or connection to who I’m styling . I pay close attention to the contemporary art world for inspiration.

How important is personal style to you when you are styling someone? How do you choose what looks work for each individual client?

I usually like to do some research on my client. I get a feel for their personal style and what they have in their closets. Then, I like to have a meeting with them and discuss the project and direction.

I usually take into account a person’s body shape, season and trends, making sure that I am feeling which will make my work standout and my client happy. Even when I am shopping or pulling for a client I like to hold the pieces up in front of a mirror, or even try them on to get a feel for it. Many things can look awful on a hanger and fabulous on the body.

What is the biggest misconception people not working in your field have about your job?

Oh Man! People often think that all I do is shop. There is a lot more to it – accounting, budgeting, mood boards, scheduling, inventory, emails, and meetings. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Finally let’s take your expert advice on styling for the season. What colours would work in a summer wardrobe?

Opt for bright colours. Play candy crush with pastel shades this summer! Also, This season you can add up a hint of indigo.

What are the bare essentials in a summer wardrobe? What trends do you think people should ditch this summer?

I would include several things in the summer wardrobe basic list. The first thing to buy is a a perfect summer dress. A dress in the most summery colours can brighten up the dullest of days. Also, the classic blue jeans never goes out of fashion. It can be paired with T-shirts, shirts and even kurtis. Try out some new styles – like the distress jeans or double toned high-waist jeans.

Don’t forget to team it all up with a bold colorful handbag will bring life to any basic summer outfit. Go for light weight open sandals so that your foot can breathes easy.
