Every December, here at Mantelpiece PR we choose a charity, which has impressed, inspired and moved us. This year, we have chosen Solace Women’s Aid. Solace Women’s Aid, is an amazing charity which support women and children who are victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse across London.
We spoke to Jessie, Solace’s Fundraising Assistant, to find out more about how MPR’s donation will make a difference and the work Solace Women’s Aid do over the Christmas Period.
What kind of work does Solace do and who for?
Solace Women’s Aid; is a London based charity, providing safe accommodation in 6 boroughs and other services across 21 boroughs in London. We work with other 11,000 Women and Children survivors of domestic and sexual abuse in London. The charity provides practical and holistic help, to every woman and child, rebuilding their lives free from abuse.
We have 19 refuges currently. Women are given safe and secure accommodation, as well as access to community services such as advice, group work and counselling. Here, at the charity we work to ensure every woman and child can access life saving services.
What sort of activity goes on specifically around Christmas?
Christmas can be a difficult time for the women and children we support. They are often alone, having had to flee from their homes and are often struggling with self-worth. Solace Women’s Aid works hard to show every woman and child that they are important, which is crucial in the festive period. We have an end of year party, where we celebrate the women’s achievements, gift the women presents and celebrate Christmas together.
What will our donation be put towards?
MPR’s donation will contribute to the Christmas gifts for women and children, we work with. This will make a huge difference, last year one woman said;
“I wanted to say how much receiving all those gifts meant to me and it overwhelmed me leaving me really, really happy and feeling cared for. I’ve had a really good day today and I haven’t had one of those for a month or so, so thank you so much.”
Being able to provide something special is really important, we are very appreciative of MPR’s generous donation.
In what way can people get involved with the charity?
Anybody can get involved with Solace Women’s Aid. You could support us at events such as; Ride London or Royal Parks Half Marathon or fundraise locally. There are also volunteering opportunities and fundraising events which anybody can get involved in, check our website (www.solacewomensaid.org) out for more information.
What does the charity have planned for 2018?
In 2018, Solace are looking forward to launching some exciting events (yet to be announced) and look forward to being involved in some big challenge events. We also are launching a new fundraising calendar filled with activities that people can get involved in!
