The Dangers Of Your Favourite Lip Balms

When looking for the ultimate “HG status” Lip Balm, not only does it have to feel good for your lips, but it has to moisturize deep into the skin to keep them looking fabulous. With a great lip balm, there may be ingredients that are put in there that actually dry out your lips faster and thus, making you use (and buy) more in the process. So we’ve taken a look at some of the greatest cult favorites lip balms in the beauty industry and cracked down on if these ingredients are present in these lip balms.

So what’s making my lips so dry?

According to LifeHacker, there are many lip balms on the market that contain camphor, phenol, alcohol, salicylic acid, petroleum, and menthol. What does that mean? These ingredients will initially soothe the lips, but then quickly dry up or cause irritation to the lips. This will then make you to feel like you need to reapply frequently and then you end up using up your brand new tube very quickly.  So when beauty bloggers rave about certain lip balms are they actually feeling the benefits of the lip balm or just the initial soothing factor of the first application? Many lip balms contain many essential oils and moisturizing ingredients that do make your lips feel amazing, but with these bad ingredients off setting the benefits, is it really worth it?

Christian Dior: Creme De Rose

This lip balm has been cult favourite due to its luxurious feel on the lips. Dior claims that their balm has a “plumping” effect from the first application. With SPF 10, Creme De Rose is seemingly the perfect lip balm to carry in your purse for those little bits of luxury in your life. With $27 a pop, it should measure up to be one of the best lip balms on the market.

The featured ingredients that are in this balm is Rose of Damas (essential oil), Vitamins A and E, Shea Butter and SPF 10. However, the ingredient list does list alcohol. Why do you need alcohol in your balm? Keeping in sanitary? Maybe, but think twice about putting that stuff on your lips. So even though this luxury item by Dior is a seemingly good idea, you may feel that you need to reapply so often that you go though a container quickly.

Fresh Sugar: Lip Treatment

If anyone’s ever used this lip balm you’ll know its one of the smoothest ones on the market. Last year Sephora gave them out as a birthday freebie and from first swipe, it was love. In this lip balm, you’ll see an immense amount of essential oils, beeswax and seed oils.

However, back in 2009, Fresh’s advanced formula was under fire for very harmful ingredients that even was linked to cancer. Now that they’ve changed the ingredients, we can all breathe a sigh of relief.

The biggest redeeming quality of this lip balm is the addition of Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate. In translation, this is a form of Vitamin C and is a antioxidant and whitening agent for anti-aging properties. Plus, its used in many products that provide excellent skin lightening, photo-protective and hydration. With this in mind, it may be time to stock up!

EOS Smooth Sphere Lip Balm

This very cute and inexpensive lip balm (that lippie collectors rave over) is widely popular among everyone and their moms. This lip balm even made an awkward appearance in JLo’s Booty music video. Even so, EOS claims that their circle balms are 95% organic, 100% natural, gluten-free, paraben-free, petrplatum- free, and phthalate- free.

However, while the hype of this lipbalm was fresh, did the balm feel a little TOO waxy? The second ingredient of the lip balm is beeswax. And Even though beeswax is raved about for its moisturizing properties, for many, it doesn’t seem to do what it claims. Beeswax can feel very stiff on the lips and so the moisture that was promised does not translate well into the lip balm.

Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm

Originally, intended for a male audience, Jack Black’s balm is soothing and highly addicting. Although, back in 2012, there was a scandal involving the ingredient list not actually being portrayed on the packaging. This is huge conflict because many consumers felt lied to (and personally betrayed) when it came to the ingredients listed on the packaging.

Some of the ingredients that consumers were not too pleased about is the presence of petrolatum, isopropylparaben and benzyl alcohol. This translates to a drying formula and harmful ingredients that you are putting on and in your mouth.

Maybelline Baby Lips

This drugstore favourite is on the same level of the EOS lip balm. Their claim of 8 hour hydration may tempt us into using this lip balm religiously. It’s cheap, widely available and promises us hours of beautiful un-chapped lips then sure, sign us up! But when we take a look at the ingredient list, we don’t know about you, but we can’t even pronounce some of the ingredients on the list. So before you pick up another Baby Lips see how many ingredients you can pronounce before you rub it on your lips.

Blistex Lip Medex

This original blue tub is known for helping us get through the winter months with smooth lips. Known for its cold sore relief, it is a staple in our own makeup kits and sadly it may not be invited to stay. With 25 ingredients in this little tub, it also contains Phenol and Oxybenzone. Phenol is a toxic ingredient that has been linked to damage the central nervous system and causes seizures and comas. Oxybenzone is a harmful sunscreen ingredient that is also linked to cancer.

Burt’s Bees

Burt’s Bees does a fantastic job insisting that their ingredients for their balms are cruelty-free and organic . However, for marketing terms, a product only needs to be 70% organic to be deemed organic. Burt’s Bees has addressed the chemicals that have been incorporated into the lip balms. Some are used for stabilizers or that they occur naturally. Nevertheless, that means 30% of the ingredient of the lip balm is free to be chalk-full of chemicals.

Greatest Solution: Coconut Oil

With all the top dogs of lip balms having some sort of issue with their ingredient list, we would say one of the best lip balms would be coconut oil in the purest form. Find yourself a jar of extra virgin (unrefined) of coconut oil to use on your lips or for a full body moisturizer. For a list of great coconut oil brands check out this post here.
