Do You Properly Balance Your Fitness Routine?
From your favourite Trendy Fit columnist: Steph
Your daily life is all about Balance. We are supposed to be always thinking, both consciously and subconsciously, about balance in our life. A balanced diet, a balance of work and play, balance so we don’t fall over. You know, everything even keel as they say! Okay, we may not always be thinking about these things, but maybe we should?
There’s at least one more place that balance should become a priority, and that is in your physical life. To have a balanced Fitness Routine you have to incorporate the 3 aspects of building a better body: strength, cardio and Flexibility. This is what the professionals call a “well-rounded” work out plan. So for example, your week might look like this:
Tuesday: Day off
Wednesday: Aerobic workout
Thursday: Arm workout/little cardio
Friday: Day off
Saturday: Day off (?)
You’re Not Balanced
Although this looks awesome, (BTW kudos to you for getting moving at least 4 times during this week!) this is not a balanced program.
If you are having trouble getting your body to where you think it should be, begin incorporating all elements of Fitness into your weekly routine. So instead of cardio twice in one week, it might only be once.
Next, move some weight around, this may either be your own body weight, free weights or even resistance bands. And finally the last component and one we all tend to forget about: flexibility.
But Why Flexibility?
The benefits of flexibility may be the key factor in creating harmonious and balanced health.
For example, improving your flexibility will help to improve your blood flow to the soft tissues of your body.
With this improvement, you can help your body to more efficiently absorb all the wonderful clean nutrients we have talked about over the last couple of weeks.
Not only this, but focusing on your flexibility will decrease your chance of injury while working on the other areas of your fitness, like your strength training and cardio. So, how can this improvement be done? How can you incorporate flexibility in everyday and help make it a priority?
Easy Ways to Improve Flexibility
Something as simple as taking the time to stretch after every workout (even just 15 extra minutes) is something that can improve your flexibility. The greatest advocate for your improvement is: yoga. Yes I know yoga can be very intimidating, especially if you have never attended a class before, but there are ways around this intimidation. Start in the comfort of your very own home! YouTube is genius for yoga videos, and a lot of the time the way I choose to work on my flexibility. I assure you, start searching and you will find at least 10 videos that you can try to get you started.
To help make flexibility a priority in your fitness journey, at the beginning of each week, write down what you are going to do during that week to get in all elements of fitness. Be sure that all parts are included (strength, cardio and flexibility) and think of these as important dates with yourself. Don’t bail out on you! Keep the commitment to yourself to help ensure balance in all essentials of your life.
