Urban Outfitters Says “Yes” To Blood Stained Shirts

Yikes! Urban Outfitters has done it again. With their new controversial sweatshirts now making headlines, how can we not be shocked? Urban Outfitters has just released a new “vintage” style shirt that has a new twist and a hefty price tag. With this seemingly blood-stained “vintage” find, Urban Outfitters’ choice of fashion may have to be re-evaluated. This Kent State University sweatshirt sold on the website for $129.

If that price doesn’t shock you, this fact might. This sweatshirt pays homage to May 4, 1970. Does this date sound familiar to you? Perhaps if you are up to date in American history, you may remember the massacre of multiple unarmed college students during the Vietnam war protest. Talk about a horrific #throwback.

This shirt is part of the “Urban Renewal Vintage” line which was only available in the UK. Regardless of where this is sold, it has been in headlines all over the world. Frankly, everyone is offended, and they should be. The Urban Outfitters’ Twitter team sent out this tweet around 10am EST Monday.

Which leads us to think, Why does this happen? This was not the first time that Urban Outfitters has offended great seas of people. Their insensitivities are frequently making headlines:

Urban Outfitters’ Obama Reference?

Urban Outfitters Says "Yes" To Blood Stained Shirts Remember this one? Urban Outfitters offended us by making this awkward reference.

This BDG Burnout Henley was offered on their website in early 2010, but what’s the controversy here, because it doesn’t appear outright? If you look closely, the controversy is based on the color coding of the shirt that’s offered. Urban Outfitters named their “black tee” after the President Obama. Literally, the two colors that were offered were: white and Obama black.

Urban Outfitters has since sent out an apology but if that doesn’t make you shake your head, then these other Urban Outfitters’ mishaps might.

Urban Outfitters Depression + Eat Less Graphic Tee’s

Talk about negative statements. A “statement tee” is a promotion in itself. We don’t know what Urban Outfitters was thinking when they were promoting teenage girls to “eat less”. Even Sophia Bush boycotted the company due to their insensitivity to body image. Now the question is, would you?

#Hipster trends like “depression”, and “eat less”, is definitely not cool in our books.

Urban Outfitters Supports Non-Consensual Hook Ups

Urban Outfitters Says "Yes" To Blood Stained Shirts Promoting girls to have non-consensual sex while intoxicated?

With raging hormones, and a large underage demographic, this may not be the best choice of a “statement tee”. No matter how cute you are, dangerous drinking culture should not be promoted. This, along with other shirts that was released with this line, was also boycotted in 2012.

With the upheaval and significance that rape culture has been receiving in the past few years, you would think that Urban Outfitters would be smarter than this.

We’re left scratching our heads at the thought of how this shirt got approved through all the various steps of marketing. Did someone have their thinking cap on backwards that day in the office?

Even the blurred out words on the shirt are made to similar someone who is drunk. Remember kids, there is a fine line behind being nice and sexual harrassment. You don’t want to be the one tripping over these lines at 4 AM in the morning when you’ve had one too many drinks and become over confident.

Urban Outfitters Makes Another History Reference

This one’s for the boys. This “Kellog Tee” reference to the Jewish David’s star is another blast from the past. This shirt retailed for $100, and it may have referenced the Holocaust. Coincidence, or are Urban Outfitters’ designers just blind?

What do you think? Do you think Urban Outfitters will join other companies like Abercrombie and Fitch in a downhill spiral? Do you think there is a subliminal message behind Urban Outfitters’ choice of fashion? Or do you think the company is only run by insensitive designers?
