Coping with Stress and Anxiety

Stress and anxiety are a way of life it seems these days. It doesn’t matter what’s going on in your world, there’s always a trigger for Stress. When you perceive a threat, your nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones provoke the body for emergency action.
Finance, career, relationships, wedding planning etc, doesn’t matter what it is, it can cause feelings of stress and anxiety. The amount of stress you will feel will greatly affect your mind and your body. Sometimes we feel the negative effects but are unaware that life stressors cause these symptoms. Whether it’s mental, emotional, physical or even behavioural, all of these areas can be affected negatively by stress.
What do the effects of stress look and feel like?
- Memory loss
- Anxiety or worrying
- chest pains or rapid heart beat
- aches and pains
- moodiness or irritability
- feeling overwhelmed, or a sense of loneliness and isolation
- eating more or less
- sleeping too much or too little
- procrastinating or neglecting responsibilities
Do any of these symptoms sound familiar to you?
Even though these are only a few symptoms listed from each of these categories, I am almost positive you have recognized at least one of these in your own behaviours. Stress is absolutely, 100% common in this day and age; but it is now all about learning how to cope with the stresses you face on a daily basis. Learning to cope will help to reduce the negative side effects.
What can you do to help yourself?
I myself am very vulnerable to stress, my body feels aches and pains, I get extremely emotional and I will feel constantly tired. I’ve come up with a few natural remedies that help me out when I’m feeling the effects of stress and anxiety.
A Mix of Chamomile and Mint Tea
A really good friend of mine suggested this to me when we were both servers at a busy restaurant in downtown Toronto- the thought of an oncoming, insane rush of people would cause a lot of stress to the both of us. She suggested mixing these two teas together before a busy shift and this would calm her down. I tried it and it definitively worked for me.
Chamomile has calming properties that help the brain, and mint is great for calming your stomach. The mix of the two creates a power tea for fighting stress! Perhaps you have a busy week coming up in your career, try mixing these two teas together to help calm you down before the storm.
Good Old Fashioned Exercise!
Yes, I know, I said it again- BUT this is a safe, non-drug related way to help deal with stress. Do something you love, but get moving. Ever hear of a runner’s high? It’s not a myth! Exercise can give you endorphins, causing a euphoric feeling during prolonged strenuous movements. Try it!
Supplement with Omega-3’s
Not only great for the heart and brain health, omega-3’s have also been known to help treat depression and anxiety. These oils keep stress hormones under control while regulating adrenaline at the same time. Try consuming as much as you can from foods (like salmon or tuna) but also, try a supplement in capsule form.
Although there are so many natural remedies out there available to you when you feel the negative effects of stress, be open to trying different things. An open mind and positivity will only help you out in the long run as negative thoughts are toxic to you and those around you.
