Fighting the Flu: Are You Doing It Properly?

TRENDY FIT feature

So you’re fighting the flu, but are you doing it properly?

From your favourite Trendy Fit columnist: Steph

This past week the flu finally caught me and kicked my a$$. Only 24 hours, but that’s all it takes for me to realize that I don’t want to go through that again for a looooooooong time! Burning the candle at both ends may have had something to do with finally getting sick, but also my Immune System was lagging in something. During the onset of the cold winter months, it seems much easier for viruses and bacteria to spread among the masses. You’re trapped inside, breathing in recycled air, traveling in close quarters on the subway; all of these things can influence the decline in your health. A lot of people will find the extreme changes in weather also have a large effect on their health and immune system.

There’s been a lot of debate going back and forth lately about vaccinations, but as an option, most pharmacies are offering the flu shot for free. However, if you are like me and prefer to do things the more natural way versus medicating, here are some things you can introduce into your Diet this fall and winter to help you in Fighting the flu and cold (yes, sometimes more than an apple a day is needed).

Probiotics or “live cultures” help to maintain a Healthy digestive tract and help to boost your immunity. While Probiotics are available in supplement form, sometimes just a serving of yogurt a day can help to keep your tummy and intestinal tract free of disease-causing germs.

To truly gain the good effects from this power Food, experts say all you need each week is 6 cloves. Now, as for the garlic breath: mouthwash or chew on parsley. Sweet Potatoes

You might forget but your skin is the largest organ your body has. This is your first line of defense for anything that is coming your way bacteria and virus wise. To keep your skin healthy, Vitamin A is a must. Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in many foods and great for the immune system. One of the best ways to get vitamin A into your diet is from foods containing beta-carotene (like sweet potatoes), which your body turns into vitamin A. Try using this power food at least once or twice a week to help your first line of defense in fighting the flu and cold this season!

The BRAT Diet

So you have a few ideas of what to consume to help fight off the sickness, what happens once you have it (this one comes from Dr. Mom).

She texted me this week and told me to remember the “BRAT diet”. Once I found out what the heck she was talking about it all made sense! You do need to remember to give back your body nutrients that you’ve lost and gain energy while you are feeling under the weather. Also, if you are having gastrointestinal issues, make sure what you’re putting into your body is easily digestible!

The BRAT diet consists of bland foods or Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast – all items that do not make up a healthy balanced diet, but trust me, they help when you are down and out with fighting the flu!!

Stay healthy my friends!
