Headed to London this month? You’ll want to swing by the Proud Gallery in Chelsea for an eyeful of our favorite racecar driver in a new exhibit called “James Hunt: Girls, Beer and Victory,” running through April 3. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Hunt the Shunt’s stunning 1976 Formula One World Championship, it’s being presented in partnership with photographer David Phipps who captured some of the most seminal moments in Hunt’s colorful career. Even better, the gallery is offering limited edition prints of Phipps’ snaps at quite reasonable prices. The Phipps collection spans the history of Formula One from 1960-1985. |
| ’76 was a dramatic season indeed encompassing as it did Hunt’s disqualification (twice) and re-instatement as the winner of the Spanish Grand Prix and Lauda’s near-fatal crash in Nurburgring where his car caught fire. Hunt ended up capturing the championship by a single point. Along the way there were lots of women, bubbly, blow and beer when nothing better was on offer. The exhibit chronicles Hunt’s early days in Formula 3 to his days with Hesketh Racing, his move to McLaren and the renowned rivalry with Lauda. Phipps went beyond the track to capture some candid and personal behind-the-scenes pix of Hunt. Well worth the trip to Chelsea for those alone. |
