Rather its faster older sibling the 904, aka the Carrera GTS, introduced a year after the now iconic coupe. Despite its astonishing success at the track – it clinched a first overall at the Targa Florio, a first at Reims, five of the top ten GT placements at Le Mans, and class wins at Spa and Sebring, among others, all in its first year – not many were built. In fact barely 100 examples were turned out by Stuttgart in the two years of production, making the first Porsche to utilize a ladder chassis and fiberglass body, born out of Porsche’s withdrawal from Formula One in 1962, also one of the very rarest. |
| Bonhams has secured one of the precious rides for its sixth annual collector car auction during Scottsdale Car Week in January, made even more desirable by its original body, engine and interior, and is looking to cash in to the tune of $2.5 million or so. Delivered new to legendary Florida dealership Brumos Porsche, it was stored after just a few races and then sold to a prominent Porsche collector in Europe where it’s remained for nearly 30 years. Powered by a four-cam flat four-cylinder engine producing 198 hp, considered by many the most complex four-cylinder ever, the 904’s mid-engine layout was inherited from the 718, aka the RSK. Porsche recently revived that model designation for the reborn Boxster and Cayman. Maybe a new 904 isn’t far behind…? |
