What To Do And See In Austin And San Antonio With Kids

travel texas

This past weekend, my family and I had the wonderful experience of visiting Texas for the first time, thanks to our friends at Chevrolet for inviting us on a fun road trip from Austin to San Antonio. We traveled in their 2018 Chevy Traverse and it honestly added to the overall experience for our family of four.

If you’re thinking about hitting the road during road trip season, here are the spots you definitely shouldn’t miss.

We started by flying into Austin and driving to Fair Market to learn about all the features of the 2018 vehicles and I can wholeheartedly say that families are their first priority when designing their vehicles. After all, they are kinda our second homes.

Safety always comes first with every single design, but we especially love the extremely detailed navigation, extra space, WiFi and ability to charge devices. The 2018 vehicles also are designed with a special fabric in the interior that can honestly withstand the power of red pop and wipe off easily without a mess. That speaks volumes to me as a mom of messy kids.

Visiting the Bluebonnets

From there we traveled to see the beautiful Bluebonnets, which are in bloom during this time of year – I can’t recommend visiting these gorgeous blue flowers anymore. They are the state flower of Texas and are in their peak in early April, so this is a great month to visit if seeing these local wildflowers in real life is your goal.

Just be careful to make sure your kiddos walk along the outskirts of the flowers as you’re getting your perfect Instagram pictures because there are snakes that like to hide inside the large clusters.

We hit as many popular spots as we could during our stay and made sure that stopping in Fredericksburg was on that list. This quaint, little town will make you feel like you’re walking back in time and is an extremely kid-friendly destination.

Fredericksburg is a German town that features great shopping, bakeries, eateries and candy stores of all kinds that your entire family will enjoy walking along the sidewalks and stopping in all the shops. Many of the eateries feature outdoor music, that my kids particularly loved and great wine for parents to enjoy, too. Make sure you check out the times that you will be visiting because some of the stores and restaurants have odd closing times.

San Antonio Riverwalk

We spent one entire day at the San Antonio Riverwalk and our children (age 9 years and 20 months) seriously couldn’t get enough of this experience. The Riverwalk is a city park and network of walkways along the banks of the San Antonio River, one story beneath the streets. We stayed at Hotel Valencia, which is right along the Riverwalk, so we didn’t even need to hop in the car at all this day and went right up to our hotel room once for a quick rest and for a few diaper changes, as well.

There are so many wonderful restaurants and stores and activities that there wasn’t room for one ounce of boredom. Our oldest son, Branden, even got a special caricature drawn while our daughter took a snooze! We did our best to experience local eateries during our adventure, but I will be completely honest that we ate lunch at The Rainforest Cafe and it was the best decision ever and probably the most peaceful lunch my husband and I have had in a long time.

This was our families first time ever in Texas and I can’t recommend visiting anymore. We felt like we walked away learning new things about the sweet people, the rich culture and connected as a family, too.
