I’m typically the type of person who thinks that your baby’s name is a personal choice. The only person whose opinion matters is the person naming the Baby. If it’s not your child it really doesn’t matter if you like your sister / brother / friend / co-worker or random acquaintance’s name choice for their child.
But I also think there are certain ‘rules’ you abide by when naming your child. Naming your child is a very personal act and a lot of thought goes in to coming up with just the perfect moniker for your baby. Some parents have names picked out ahead of time while others like to wait to meet their child before making a final decision.
We all know no one ‘owns’ a name but we’ve all heard those stories of friends or relatives who ‘stole’ a baby name, creating friction among friends or family members. I remember writing about one Woman who was upset that her sister stole not one, but both of her children’s names. That was totally odd.
But what happens when someone else who isn’t a super close friend copies your baby’s name? Are you justified in getting angry about it? Or do you just suck it up and deal with it?
One woman asked that very question when she found out that someone she didn’t like very much copied her baby’s name.
