Changing Weather and Eye Health: How to Prepare Your Eyes for Colder Seasons

Every year, without even realizing it, we actively help our bodies adapt to Colder weather. We wear our hats (because grandma told us that wearing a cap kept your whole body warmer). And, we happily throw on some gloves because cold hands can feel terribly uncomfortable. But, did you know your Eye health can change as the weather gets colder? Here are three ways to prepare your eyes for colder seasons.

  1. Hydrate for Happy Eyes.

Cold weather can equate to dry skin and eyes. Sometimes this happens because we fail to drink enough, other times indoor heating systems seem to suck the moisture straight from our bodies. To keep your eyes happy and healthy this winter, remember to keep your body hydrated. The more water you drink, the more likely your eyes are to stay moist. If you still feel painful dryness in your eyes, then consider keeping moisturizing eye drops with you or talking to your Eyeglass World optometrist about prescription eye drop options.

  1. Remember Your Sunglasses.

Though you may assume your sunglasses get a season off, remember that the sun’s harmful UVA/UVB rays shine just as bright (if not brighter) during the winter months. If you’re planning any outdoor winter activities-like skiing or snowboarding, remember that the sunlight reflecting off the snow can be doubly dangerous for your vision. Wear your sunglasses whenever you’re out this winter and consider sport sunglass goggle options if your plans for the season includes winter sports. Sunglasses and sports goggles can also help protect your eyes from the cold wind or flying debris, keeping them both safer and more comfortable.

  1. Check Your Night Vision.

Shorter days rank as one of the biggest adjustments for many of us in the colder months. Instead of driving to and from work during the daylight, suddenly we may have to leave the house before dawn or drive home in the dark. If you notice that your night vision isn’t what it used to be, stop by your closest Eyeglass World and get an eye exam. There are many options—from eyeglasses to special anti-glare tints on your frames if you already wear glasses—that can help you see better at night. If you’ve been seeing halos (rings around lights) or if you simply can’t see as well in the dark as you used to, don’t wait. Be safe and get the prescription help you need.

Talk to the friendly staff at your closest Eyeglass World to see how they can help you prepare your eyes for the colder months ahead!
