Visual Acuity Test: Modern day version of the eye chart.

Auto-Refractor: This test figures out how much correction your Vision needs. It gives the doctor a baseline for your prescription.

Tonometer/Glaucoma Test: This eye-puff test shoots a sudden puff of air into your eye to test the Pressure in your eye for signs of glaucoma. It doesn’t hurt and takes less than a minute.

Visual Fields Test: This optional test (may be additional cost) is helpful for detecting eye conditions like macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, blind spots and glaucoma. It checks your central and peripheral vision.

Once you’re in the doctor’s chair, here are some of the words you’ll hear.

Dilation: Your doctor may open your pupil (the black circular opening in the center of the colored part of your eye) with some drops to make it larger and easier to examine.

Refractive Error: This is a technical way to say that you see things blurry without vision correction.

Nearsightedness or Myopia: This means you have trouble seeing far away.

Farsightedness or Hyperopia: This means you see pretty well far away, but can’t see things up close.

Astigmatism: If your cornea isn’t completely spherical, things can look fuzzy. Most people have some degree of astigmatism; your doctor will prescribe what’s best if this is affecting your vision.

Diopter: This is a unit of measure that tells you how strong the lens is. Your eyeglass prescription may be measured in diopters.

Cataracts: Cataracts are cloudy or opaque spots on the lens that may require surgery if they’re affecting your vision.
