Eyeglass World Color Story: Using Pastels

Push your neons and brights to the back of the closet. Pastels are back this spring and they’re likely sticking around for a while.

Light lemon yellow, baby girl pinks, soft sky blues and even pale greens will be softening up the color palette in storefronts and on magazine covers.

Can anyone wear these light, muted colors? The answer is yes! Here are some tips on using pastels:

First: Know Your Colors

Most of us don’t look good in every pastel color. So, know which ones work best with your skin tone. Turn your wrist over and notice whether you have blue or yellow undertones. Although this sounds odd at first, when you look for it, it should be clear which category your skin tone falls in.

If you have blue undertones, you’ll want to use cooler pastel shades – or, shades that have a lot of blue in them. For example: light sea foam green is a color that contains a lot of blue.

If you have yellow undertones, you’ll want to stick to warmer pastel shades. These can be harder to find. But, some pastel yellows, oranges and greens will complement your skin tone better than other shades.

Second: Choose Your Placement

Great news! You can find pastel pants, skirts, dresses, blouses, handbags and shoes in stores this season. So, if you love pastel pink, but know that muted shade makes you look like you’ve been sick for a week, simply avoid wearing it next to your face. Choose a pastel pink skirt and pastel pink shoes and pair them with a simple white or black blouse. Or grab that baby blue dress you’ve been eyeing, but put a navy blue scarf around your neck to avoid looking washed out.

Third: If You Can Pair it, Wear it

If pastel colors look great on you, go all in. Head-to-toe pastels dominated the runways at fashion week. Don’t be afraid to combine a few of your favorite pastels into one stylish outfit.

Fourth: Frame your Pastels Perfectly

Consider adding a fresh dose of style to your eyeglass wardrobe with a pretty, pastel-kissed eyeglass frame. If pastels don’t look great on you, there are excellent eyeglass frame options that give you a brighter color (or black) on the front with pastel earpieces—just enough color to show everyone you’re in style.
