Why do you do what you do?
If your answer is “because I Love it.”, I’m not letting you get off that easily. Why do you love it? Seriously, why do you do it? It’s so fucking hard. Entrepreneurship. And fashion entrepreneurship at that.
The days are long, the work is constant. We feel lost and confused and uncertain and exhausted.
It takes so long for the business to really take hold. We go for years without making any money and we often feel like our wheels are spinning.
Most sane human beings do whatever they can to avoid putting themselves into situations like what I just described above.
So why are we different? Why do we do this? Why do we make ourselves stressed, uncomfortable, and vulnerable?
This is something I’ve thought about lot over the years. I’ve often found myself in a moment when it all feels like too much and I can’t see how I could possibly keep going. But then, for some reason, I do keep going. I don’t give up. And this makes me wonder, Why do I do what I do?
I don’t know that I have an answer really, so I’m just going to type and see what comes out. So here goes.
I love makers and making.
I value the craft of Fashion.
I hate that anyone should be made to feel like they can’t do something.
I’m sad when I think about how fast life goes by and that there are so many people who never actually get around to doing what makes them happy.
I want to live my life my way.
I think we live in a time when we’re all surrounded by opportunity in a way the generations before never were.
I don’t like the idea of wasting opportunities.
I don’t like the exclusivity and snotty culture so often associated with the fashion industry.
I want to help people. But I also want to help myself.
I enjoy writing.
I love clothing, I love the feel of fabrics and the smell of leather.
I love travel and want to make sure that I can always do it, without any restrictions due to having to report for a job.
I have fun doing it.
I like people but I also like to be alone.
I love the freedom of self expression and I think clothing and adornment is one of the best ways to show it.
I want to make money, my way.
I love the feeling of accomplishing something big.
Other than my excessive typos, I did not go back and edit anything above; I didn’t add and I didn’t subtract. I stopped when I felt like I was done.
I’m not sure why I wrote this post. I guess, since we’re in the middle of a launch with the StartUp FASHION Community, I was just thinking about how hard this business is. How important it is to really love what you’re doing because otherwise, there’s absolutely no point.
I’m sitting here fully understanding that I need to be “marketing” and “promoting” the fact that the Community is open. So of course I thought about why I think designers would want to join us, which led me to think about why I do it. Then I started wondering why you do it!
What an interesting exercise this was. I’ve never done something like this before. Have you? Try it.
Why do you do what you do, designers?
All my love and encouragement,
P.S. I do actually want to make sure that you know that we’re currently welcoming new members into the Community for a short time. So, if you want to hang out with others who understand why you do what you do and who know exactly what you’re going through, come join us. We’re over here >>
