If you’re new to the Pinup scene, either participating in it or just admiring it from afar, you may have noticed that a lot of women have a special persona, or name! Kind of like an alter ego for Clark Kent or Bruce Wayne, but vintage. A lot of girls who are just starting out in pinup pageants or modeling will ask me “how do you come up with your own pinup name?” So today I wanted to answer that!
How Aphrodite Came to Be
To begin I wanted to tell you the story of how I came up with my own name! I’m sorry if it shocks some of you that my given name is not Aphrodite, but it is the truth. Gosh, I’m glad to have that out there… But when I entered my first pageant, I realized that all the other girls had these cute names and I didn’t!
For my first pageant I just went by my own name and was Miss Kate, which was totally fine. However, I wanted my own vintage identity and so I started to try to come up with my own. I researched a lot online and took note of the other names, what was really common and what was cute. I also plugged some of my details into a pinup name generator.
Unfortunately all the generator did was give me some weird and cheesy words together, nothing that really suited me. They did give me some ideas though on what a name could be!
For inspiration, I liked to Hollywood starlets of the 1940’s and 50’s to see what type of names they had. Nothing really stuck, or felt right for me. I asked my husband which vintage actress I looked most like, and he said none of them! What?! He said I looked like a Greek goddess instead.
This meant a lot to me because I have always struggled with body dysmorphia, and had recently gained a lot of weight (all healthy and needed). And he was right! Even Greek goddesses have some curves to them. So I thought, why not embrace my new body and own it? It’s something I can Love and be proud of. I picked the name Aphrodite, which is the goddess of love and beauty.
Obviously that fits in well with the whole pinup thing, and I liked it even more because my given name is actually of Greek origin. Since I was a kid, I have always loved Greek mythology, so this was very exciting for me to be called that name!
I added Darling at the end because I wanted to incorporate a more classic pinup vibe into it, as Aphrodite is a bit unusual. I love it though, and it’s certainly unique!
Before anything, you’ll need to get a good baseline of what is standard, and what types of names people use. You can always search social media and there will be no shortage of ladies with great pinup names. And, I know I made fun of them earlier, but the pinup name generator can actually have some cute ideas, if you cherry-pick what you like.
If you’re looking for a pretty comprehensive list of pinup names, you should head to the Pinup Registry! It contains a whole ton of names from ladies around the world. Is it every single pinup? No. But it’s more than enough to get some ideas.
You never know where you might find inspiration! So give these a look and maybe you will see something that catches your eye. It would also beneficial to look through names that were popular in the 40’s and 50’s and see if you like anything. Several girls I know like to use their grandmothers’ names or another family member they love.
Here are a couple simple guidelines to keep in mind as you brainstorm for your own pinup names.
- Choose out a name that has meaning to you personally! You don’t have to, but it will be easier for you to find something you love this way.
- Find a name that suits your personality. Are you sultry, sweet, demure, flirty, or sassy? there will be a name to suit you.
- If you have something unique about yourself that you’d like to feature, you can include that too. You can honor you heritage by choosing part of a name in a different language!
- Run it by a few people just in case it sounds something similar to something bad and you haven’t realized that.
- Use anything that has already been done before! When picking out a name, search it on google and every social media platform to make sure it isn’t already in use.
- Choose anything lewd or vulgar! Oftentimes pinup events are family friendly.
- Avoid the names that are everywhere! You don’t want to just be another Cherry in a sea of Cherries.
- Settle on a name you don’t love just because you feel like you need one! You can always come up with one in the future.
Here are some amazing examples of everything I’ve said earlier, and all of these are girls I know personally. I have met them through pageants or online, and I love the thought and creativity behind the pinup name they created.
Miss Honey DeLuxe – this is my best friend’s pinup name. She chose it because she calls everyone honey and it sounds perfect for a sultry, mysterious pinup(she definitely is!).
Mara Chino – I love this because its a pun but it also sounds cute and like a name. It also gives her a great theme to play off when planning outfits.
Miss Sassy Marie – this is perfect because she is, well, sassy! She used her middle name combined with an adjective that describes her and that’s a solid formula.
Miss Bettie Butcher – her name is perfect because she actually is a butcher by trade. The Bettie is classic but that one part makes her super different!
That is all for today, beautiful friends! I hope I was able to give you some solid advice on how to create your own pinup name. Above all, just be creative, have fun, and do what you feel suits you. I have so much faith that you’ll be able to come up with something to perfectly fit your pinup self.
