I’m not sure that there are many dresses as legendary in the pinup community as the Monica Dress from Pinup Girl Clothing! These gorgeous dresses come in a variety of colors as well as sizes. More importantly, they are known for being the sexiest dresses on the market!
Lots of vintage girls own one and swear by it, or furiously looking for one in the color they want. And it’s not hard to see why! Any girl I see wearing this looks fabulous, no matter what size or body type they are.
Could this dress be like the magic pants of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants?! Well I set out to see for myself.
First off, let’s discuss the basics of this number. The Monica dress is a wiggle dress meant to enhance every girl’s natural curves. It’s ruched from the top all the way to the bottom, which is not only gorgeous but also super flattering! As I mentioned before, I haven’t seen a picture of anyone wearing it that hasn’t looked incredible.
It’s made of knit stretch material in a matte finish (although there are a few versions of the Monica dress that are shimmery). I chose the dark green, but it comes in a whole array of colors to suit any fancy! Red, purple, mustard, oxblood, gold, black, and navy, just to name a few. There is even a mini option if you’d like that! I went for the standard length.
They can all be found on Pinup Girl Clothing’s website, here. If you’ve never shopped at PUG, you totally should! Laura Byrnes is the mastermind behind all of these designs and she creates all of the beautiful clothing.
Now, let’s talk sizing. This frock comes in sizes xs to 4xl, so it will likely have a size to fit you. Usually I am a size medium, but sometimes a size small with certain companies and certain fits. (My bottom half is also larger than my top half). While it is meant to fit snugly, it is not meant to be uncomfortable.
That is where I made my error. When I got this dress earlier in the year, quarantine hadn’t hit, and I have gone up a few pounds since then. Not only that but I overestimated the stretch, and I got a small. A fatal miscalculation.
Okay, I’m being overly dramatic… do I look great in the Monica dress? Absolutely I do! However, it took another person’s help to get it on and off, and it took a fair amount of time. When I order another one of these beautiful babies, I will order it a size up! I recommend for people in between sizes to order up as well, unless you have someone to help you put it on and you want to look extra glamorous. They’re aren’t any buttons or zippers to you really do have to wiggle into it!
Now for the fun features! The sleeves are made so you can wear them on or off the shoulder, depending on your preference. What’s nice about that is that the inside of the bust-line contains a clear elastic lining so that it will stick to your skin, keeping it in place anywhere you want to wear it.
There are also cups in the front for support,so you can wear a bra if you want but it isn’t absolutely necessary. I will say that I wanted a bit of extra oomph so I had one, but with how form fitting the dress is, I think you would be completely fine to forego it.
The rest of the Monica dress is equally form fitting and supportive. Underneath the stretchy knit fabric, there is a layer of stretch shapewear! It’s meant to cinch in your waist, and hold in your stomach, hips, and upper thighs. Which is the area that the most women want a little bit of help in.
I definitely felt that everything I had was being sucked in to the highest degree. To be honest I felt like a busted can of biscuits. But that was my own fault for not ordering the right size! And you couldn’t tell just by looking at me.
Last but not least, the length. I am 5’8, and it comes just below my knees. With the way the fabric is ruched, I think that this would be a good length for lots of different heights!
Is the Monica dress all that it’s cracked up to be? YES! I adore how this dress looks on. If you are looking for something timeless and jaw-droppingly beautiful, this is the dress for you. Any and all complaints I have about it are due to my own errors in ordering the wrong size.
Even with that considered though, it still looks so beautiful and if I hadn’t said anything, nobody would have known that it was such a struggle to put on and take off. Everyone at the shoot said that the dress looked beautiful on and that they couldn’t tell it was too small.
I think that is just a testament to how amazing the Monica dress is and how well she holds up under pressure! As for this dark green beauty, I may be donating, selling, or gifting her in the near future. Although it worked for the photoshoot, I don’t think it would be a piece I’ll wear a whole lot. Don’t worry though, I will certainly begetting a replacement in size medium so I can feel this spectacular again!
