Vintage Summertime Hacks

For those of us in the northern hemisphere, summer is here! The 21st of June marks the summer solstice. Hooray! Except that with summertime comes the heat, and that brings a whole host of problems for us pinups.

How can you possibly stay glamourous when your makeup is sliding off your face and your clothes are sweaty and your Hair looks like you spent time in Azkaban? Well, it’s pretty much impossible. So have no fear, Aphrodite is here to give you all the tips and tricks to prevent getting to that point.

Here in Arizona we’ve hit 110 degrees several times and I am feeling it. Time for me to bust out all of my summer habits. If you’re ready to beat the heat in Vintage style, keep on reading!

Hack #1: Create some shade for yourself!

As I’m sure you’re all aware, one of the best ways to stay cooler is to stay out of the sun and in the shade. But sometimes, you have to get creative and make your own. And you can absolutely do it with some pinup flair!

There are two main suggestions that I have. Number one is to wear a vintage sunhat. Of course, I love to go more dramatic with my looks, but you can do something less showy and more casual.

I love this hat as it’s huge! You can buy it here.

I adore how they look, and they work wonders for me! A hat keeps me from squinting and ruining my makeup, cools down my face, and of course keeps me from the dreaded sunburn. Accessorizing is super fun too! Hats open up a bunch of possibilities to keep cool in the summertime.

The second way to create your own shade is to use a parasol. Almost nothing is more elegant than a vintage parasol, and it’s portable shade that covers your whole body! It gives off a sort of southern charm as well.

I love these parasols from Unique Vintage. You can go for a rainbow one if you’re feeling colorful and bold. There’s a red one for the more classic pinups, and even a black one if you’re feeling particularly mysterious.

Hack #2: Be strategic with your undergarments.

I’m just gonna say it… summertime can be hot and sweaty and messy when it comes to your skin underneath several layers of clothing. I don’t need to elaborate. We all know exactly the struggles I am referring to.

So let’s choose undergarments that are going to help with these struggles instead of aggravating them! To start, wear underwear made of a light, breathable fabric. Nothing heavy that will trap in moisture.

You can purchase them here.

Trust me, I too love me some good shapewear and stockings. But when it reaches a high temperature, it may be time to forego them! Especially if you know you’re going to be outside all day.

I have never personally tried them, but several of my friends love spray on stockings and swear by them! They seem like a great idea and a way to cut down on an extra layer while still looking fabulous. You can get them here.

Hack #3: Invest in a good setting spray

When your makeup starts dripping down your neck, it’s all over. Honestly, there’s really no recovery from that. So the key here is to prevent it from ever happening.

Summertime may ruin many of your products’ efficacy, but not setting spray! I recommend Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray. There are many good brands out there but this one is by far my favorite I’ve tried, and it was a best seller back when I worked at Ulta.

You can purchase this setting spray here.

I use it during pageants and my makeup won’t budge until I take it off at night. Keep in mind that this is in the middle of the summertime in Arizona! It can be over 100 degrees and a setting spray will keep your face from going anywhere.

Hack #4: Bring a fan!

No, I’m not talking about all your adoring fans that love your work. (Pinups tend to have many). I mean one of these fans!

This one is spooky cute! You can get it here.

They’re charming in an old fashioned way, and certainly give off an vintage vibe. And hey, if you want to flirt, all you gotta do is wave your fan and flutter your eyelashes. Aside from that though, these are great for softly fanning away any sweat that may or may not be running down your face.

The one I pictured does have a creepy cute feel to it but they do come in man colors and styles. Often I’ve found really adorable ones at my local Dollar Store!

Hack #5: Make full use of hair accessories.

When the temperature reaches new heights, it’s natural to want to put your hair up. It’s something I do, and it makes it easier for your wet set to last. But updos can become boring after a few tries, and there’s nothing I hate more than when your look gets stale.

That’s why you need to mix it up with hair accessories! Bows, hair flowers, turbans, barrettes, head scarves… the possibilities are endless. But all of them will help your hair stay up and off your face, and more importantly, off your neck. I have a few different posts on updos as well as hair accessories! If you’re interested in reading them, you can click on the hair and beauty tab above.

Smashing! I have a tutorial on how to style these babies here.

If you absolutely have to wear your hair down for an event or for your own outfit, a hairnet is a must have. I know, I know, you’re imagining a lunch-lady hairdo, and that’s pretty heinous! But that isn’t what I mean at all. The kind of hairnet I’m talking about is ultra fine, and you can barely see it once you put it on.

When you slip one of these on, it’s hardly noticeable but will keep your curls from falling out due to heat, sweat, or humidity. And it protects you from the dreaded frizz. Be sure to get one that closely matches your hair color, though, because otherwise it will stick out. You can buy one here!

So beauties, I hope that this information is enough to keep you glamorously vintage all through the summertime! Leave your own tips in the comments below! What do you do to beat the heat? I want to know.
