Best Beard Oil 2020: Top 7 For Facial Hair Care

Because your Beard resides on top of the most sensitive skin on your body, the face, proper care is an absolute must.

And that is where having the best beard oil comes in.

If you’ve been one of the brave bearded warriors for a while now, you would already know that a lot goes into caring for your beard, especially when it comes to choosing the right grooming products. However, with this recent surge of beards being in style and so many new men entering the realm of facial manhood, there is a lot that you`d need to learn.

Depending on how long your beard is, it may be impossible to moisturize the skin under there, so a Beard Oil is what you would be required to use instead. It sure makes your grooming regimen much easier, however if you do not own this product, you are making a big mistake at the expense of both your facial hair and skin.

This is really all you need to grow a long and healthy beard, so finding one of the top beard oils is something you need to take into account.

What Does A Beard Oil Do?

To put it simply, a beard oil serves 4 primary purposes:

1. Moisturizes your beard: This will make your beard not only softer, but much more manageable and easier to trim as well.  Remember, a hydrated beard is a happy one.
2. Conditions the beard: The second purpose a beard oil has, and surely an important one, is that it conditions the hair. This will help you prevent beard dandruff that would otherwise occur by being outside in the perilous environment that ultimately dries out your mane. Also, it may make some beards seem shinier.
3. Prevents itchy beard: Beard itch is a common complaint that men have and the fix is usually as simple as applying a beard oil daily. Who know it would be that easy?
4. Keeps your beard smelling better: Not all products have a scent, but most do and they really do keep the accumulating smell of sweat under control.

Now that you know the purpose, let’s get down the list that you are waiting to see. We have tested over 40 of these products over the span of 6 months, and these are the winners from the bunch.

A Deep Look Inside The 7 Best Beard Oils

7. Leven Rose Beard Oil And Leave-in Conditioner

One of the best things about the Leven Rose beard oil is that it comes with just two ingredients, organic jojoba oil and organic argon oil, and doesn’t contain any “filler” ingredients, including additives and fragrances. Now this actually makes it our choice for the best beard oil for sensitive skin, as it will not irritate you but still work pretty effectively.

The Leven Rose beard oil is vegan friendly, and apparently works well for pretty much all types of beards, ranging from the healthier, smoother ones to the coarse and wild ones. While it doesn’t contain any artificial moisturizers like some of the other products out there, its natural ingredients turn out to be enough to moisturize your beard and give it a tidier, attractive look.

Similarly, we found that works great at getting rid of beardruff and itchiness. This turns out to be tremendously useful, as there’s an “always itchy” phase while growing a beard, which can get very distracting. The only downside we have is that especially on the longer beards, it really does not condition as well as some of the other products do so you`d still need an external conditioner. Furthermore, because the size is only 1 oz, you really aren’t getting that great of a bang for your buck as there are better oils out there.

Size: 1 oz
Scent: Subtly unscented
Rating: 9.3/10

6. Art Naturals Organic Beard And Mustache Oil

This facial hair oil seems to be specifically useful for those with a dry or coarse beard. Usually, a dry beard, besides looking dull and unattractive, can also lead to the dreaded itch issue.

The Art Naturals organic beard oil comes with all natural and organic ingredients, with the main ones being jojoba oil, argan oil, and vitamin E. It also comes with some carrier oils, helping it offer the perfect balance that you need to keep your beard moisturized and healthy.

Applying it on a daily basis is going to make your beard softer, healthier and give it a very attractive look (healthier beards tend to look attractive anyway).

This product is very light, but it gives more of a greasy look than other beard oils. That’s not necessarily a bad thing when it comes to your beard, but if that’s not your thing than you should skip this one.

Size: 2 oz
Smell: Subtly unscented
Rating: 9.4/10

5. Beardsmen Spirit Premium Beard Oil and Conditioner

The first thing we have to say is that you really get a great bang for your buck with the Beardsmen Spirit beard oil, as it boasts a four times larger size of 4 oz than most of the other products out there. Surprisingly enough, the quality is even up to par if not better than the others.

It certainly does a great job like other excellent beard oils in terms of making your mane softer, healthier, shinier, as well as getting rid of beardruff and itchiness. The smell is what makes this product unique however, as it has a strong, “manly”, menthol-like smell. If that’s your thing, this is the oil for you.

Despite having a “manly” smell, it isn’t overpowering or distracting. We found it to actually be fairly comfortable and perfectly pleasant, unless of course if you’re a fan of those unscented beard oil products.

The ingredients in this are made up of a unique blend of primarily jojoba oil, almond oil, grapeseed oil, castor oil, as well as three other essential oils; Eucalyptus Globulus, Juniperus Virginiana Oil, and Pinus Sylvestris Oil. The result is an effective, non greasy oil.

One important thing to note about this product is that it works great both as a beard oil and conditioner. While there are several other similar products that claim to play the dual role as well, not many of them really eliminate the need of a conditioner. This one actually does. Your beard should be controlled and hydrated quite well with the application of this oil.

Finally, given the so many unique advantages it comes with and it’s above average bottle size, it can be easily concluded that it’s indeed one of the most affordable beard oil products on the market, and definitely a smart purchase.

Size: 4 oz
Smell: Manly, menthol-like smell.
Rating: 9.5/10

4. The Gentlemen’s Beard Oil and Conditioner

This is one of our favorite beard oil and for great reasons. Firstly, it’s a vegan friendly product, comes with all natural ingredients, and doesn’t contain any fragrances or additives.

Similarly, it really stands out given that unlike most of the other beard oils that claim to be unscented, The Gentlemen’s Beard oil is truly and completely unscented. It is especially effective in conditioning your beard, packed with the primary ingredients of organic sunflower seed oil, organic argan seed oil, Organic Oenothera biennia seed oil, organic jojoba oil, and Tocopherols ( Vitamin E ).

The Vitaman E is a nice touch and makes this product super potent at driving beardruff away, as well as rendering your beard to look both shiny and healthy. Furthermore, it also helps deal with those pesky split ends that are caused by stray hairs that grow in weird directions.

Overall, it is only 1 oz and pretty expensive when compared to the rest. However, that is the case because this is a high quality unscented beard oil and the creators surely know that. Well worth the price if you ask us.

Size: 1 oz
Smell: Truly unscented.
Rating: 9.8/10

3. Badger Balm Navigator Class Beard Oil

A much less known product on the market, which we were tipped off by a trusted beardsman to test, the Badger beard oil truly surprised us. Family owned and family run, W.S Badger Co. Inc. provides certified organic and all natural body care products that are the perfect response to a growing need for better ingredients and clarity in the products we use. Not to mention, being true to their brand, they are cruelty free as well.

The Navigator class beard oil and conditioner is very potent and especially great for thick beards. You may notice that it feels a bit greasy at first, but as soon as it settles into your beard that sensation will be long gone and instead followed by your beard being soft and tamed. We noticed that it also adds a little shine to your beard, but not in an unnatural way, which might actually be a great thing for those of you that want to accentuate your beard as the centerpiece of your facial features.

There is a scent present in this oil, however it is a bit difficult to describe it. The best we can do is say that it smells a bit peppery and a bit spicy, but not pungent at all. You should not be applying much oil regardless so the scent should not be overbearing regardless. If you love the Old Spice products, chances are you will love the smell of the Badger Balm beard oil ( hope that helps ).

As far as the ingredients go, this product includes the certified organic oils of Jojoba, Babassu, Sunflower, Sandalwood, Black pepper, and Cardamom topped off with Pomegranate seed extract and a couple other extracts for good measure. This is a great mixture of fully organic and all natural ingredients, which leads us to award the Badger Balm as the best organic beard oil of 2018.

Like most of the other beard oils we feature on this list, this one also has the right ingredients to nourish and combat beardruff. Overall, the higher price for 1 oz is surely justified considering the organic nature of this product, so if you want the best for your beard you can’t go wrong with the Badger.

Size: 1 oz
Scent: Spicy, peppery scent.
Rating: 9.7 / 10

2. Artius Man Mountain Air Beard Oil

The Mountain Air beard oil by Artius Man is two things for sure: It’s a new product and it’s really, really good. The scent is incredibly unique and pleasant, mostly smelling like fresh cedar wood with a hint of spearmint. It is not at all overbearing, but you can definitely smell it in a way that echoes the spirit of the outdoors that our ancient ancestors were more in touch with.

After using this product, we very quickly we came to the conclusion that this concoction is incredibly potent at fighting against beardruff and moisturizing your beard.

The ingredients that make up this product include the best essential oils for your hair. There is castor oil, sunflower oil, argan oil, shea oil, and most importantly Jojoba oil and Vitamin E. They combine this with cedarwood, patchouli, cypress, and spearmint oils for a wonderful concoction that illuminates your beard to portray that of the utmost health and vigor.

The company, Artius man focuses on men’s grooming products and they are known for rigorous testing. They create products in small, controlled batches which include using high-quality, natural and organic ingredients.

Although they are fairly new to the market, with products like these they should have a very bright future that includes many satisfied bearded gentlemen. They definitely have one here.

1. Grave Before Shave Bay Rum Beard Oil

First things first, the packaging of this product is excellent! We don’t even want to spoil it for you. When first opening it, if the packaging is any indication of the quality, we were in for a pleasant surprise. And it was.

With that being said, it really deserves the number 1 spot. It comes with all natural ingredients and manages to get to the skin beneath your beard to nourish both your beard and skin.

It works great at conditioning and softening your beard, thanks to being packed with effective natural ingredients such as jojoba oil, apricot oil, almond oil and tea tree oil.

This not only assists in the growth of your beard, but also keeps it (and the skin beneath) free from itchiness, flaking and dandruff. Therefore, it is definitely the best beard oil for growth as long as you understand that these are not miracle products and that most of the growth blueprint is a result of genetics.

In terms of the smell, if you like rum you are in for a treat. There is something just pleasant about the rum scent mixed with a slight after smell of coconut. It will make you think you’re sailing the mighty seas like Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean.

However, all these things don’t come cheap, and though the actual price is on the lower side, the bottle size is just 1 oz. This means that you’re paying a slightly premium price when compared to other products.

With that being said, if you value quality (and your beard’s health) over a few bucks, than this Bay Rum beard oil by Grave Before Shave is the optimal choice.

Size: 1 oz
Scent: Manly pirate bay rum smell with slight hint of coconut. Wonderful.
Rating: 9.8/10

Ingredients In Your Beard Oil

Well, while there’s little to talk about what ingredients to avoid in a beard oil product, there’s actually quite a bit you need to know about the ingredients it needs to come with. Argan and Jojoba are considered to be the best ingredients for a beard oil product. They come with all types of benefits that we talked about above for your beard.

Jojoba seed is actually the ingredient that is closest to mirroring the natural oil that the skin produces. For that, it makes it the most optimal one to have in your beard oil.

As far as ingredients to avoid, they mainly include the “bad shaving cream” perpetrators: Propylene Glycol, Parabens, Phthalates and Formaldehyde. These can cause irritation to your skin and are not recommended at all especially in an oil based product. Similarly, all “fragrance” ingredients that aren’t all natural should be avoided as well, as they are infamous for leading to acne and other skin irritations.

Our top beard oils list does NOT include any of these ingredients, so we have you best interests covered as always.

How Do You Apply Beard Oil Correctly?

It’s important to know how to apply beard oil properly in order to make sure you get all the benefits it offers. Regardless of how long your beard is, you can get rid of that constant itching and beardruff by using beard oil correctly.

First things first, you need to apply the oil at the right time. It’s recommended to apply it after you take a warm shower. If you tend to take cold showers, however, you may want to wash your face with warm water before applying the oil. Using warm water on your face helps the pores soak in the oil for maximum potency.

However, you also need to make sure that your face is dry and there’s no water in your beard before applying the oil. It isn’t a good idea to apply oil on a wet beard. For that, what you should do is simply pat dry your beard down with a towel, and then apply it when it is dry. Regarding the amount of oil you should use, let us tell you that there isn’t any “magic” number here.

It pretty much depends on how long your beard is as well as how oily you are. That being said, if you have just started to grow your beard, only one drop of oil may be more than enough.

Similarly, if you have got a short beard ( but it has been a while since you started growing it ), 1-2 drops should be ideal. However, if you have got a medium-sized beard, you may want to use 2-4 drops to make sure it gets enough nourishment.

Lastly, for the super long beards it is ideal to focus on around 4-6 drops. Take these numbers with a grain of salt, though, as you would eventually have to keep adjusting the amount of oil you use until you find the right amount that seems to be working best for your beard.

You can also apply oil on your beard as often as you like, as you can’t really overdo it (unless maybe you start applying it several times a day, but we are not sure why anyone would do that).

We recommend trimming with your beard trimmer of choice before applying the oil, although if you do it after it’s not the worst choice. If your beard is that thick and hard to trim, applying before trimming is a reasonable decision.

The actual physical way you apply the oil isn’t too difficult. You can simply place the desired number of drops into the palm of your hand, rub your hands together, and start applying from the base of your neck up to your cheeks, covering your beard completely and also making sure some of it reaches the skin beneath when possible.

Concluding Thoughts

Because the market is flooded with a cornucopia of different great beard oils, it was pretty difficult grading them. Some products we didn’t list, for obvious reasons, even ended up irritating our skin. With that said, if you do have sensitive skin, we urge you to pick one of the unscented oils.

If at any point your skin does get irritated, seize using that product as you may be allergic to one of the ingredients.

Lastly, a beard oil is not the only product meant for grooming your mane. If you are looking for more of a beard styling product, read our comparison between beard oils and beard balms.
