Pinned By Pearls: Celebrity Men Wearing Pearls on 2018 Red Carpets to Support Women in Hollywood

This year, Celebrity Men are showing their solidarity in supporting women in Hollywood by wearing pins. Their Time’s Up pins were donned to publicly acknowledge their support in combating pay inequality and sexual violence in America and the film industry as a whole. Pinned By Pearls, however, is an entirely different movement altogether.

Celebrity men are also wearing pearl pins at various red carpet awards shows to support the women of Hollywood movement known as Pinned By Pearls. According to Teen Vogue, such movements are pushing forward thanks to the facilitation of Hollywood’s elite.

About Pinned By Pearls & the Women’s Suffrage Movement

The Women’s Suffrage Movement is the inspiration behind the vintage pearl pins being worn on red carpets by celebrity men this year under the Pinned By Pearls brand. Those who wear the inspirational pearl jewelry pieces are pledging the following:

“I am actively looking for projects directed, produced, written by and starring women, as well as other marginalized voices. I believe our industry culture will only heal when there are new, diverse voices in power. I wear this pin because I don’t want to stand by; I want to stand up for change.”

So far, this year, quite a few actors have been seen sporting pearl pins on the red carpets of the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards, including Sterling K. Brown and award-winning actor Tom Hanks.

And, with so much press and media time going towards the recent Hollywood sex scandals, even more celebrity men are expected to don the Pinned By Pearls pins this March at the upcoming Oscar awards.

Pinned By Pearls VS Time’s Up Movement

Pinned By Pearls is a bit different than the Time’s Up movement because it’s a public declaration of support, versus a fundraising campaign. And, for the record, the Pinned By Pearls and Time’s Up movements are completely unrelated.

The Pinned By Pearls official website states:

“We are an opportunity for those with influence in the industry to make a public pledge, seeking out diversity and equality in leadership.”

About Pinned By Pearls: Why Pearl Hatpins?

The pearl hat pin was chosen to represent the movement because of its historical connection to the suffering and empowerment of women. Back in the day, hat pins were a very important symbol of the suffragette movement, where women fought hard to win the right to vote in pubic elections.

These pins with their “deadly” points were said to have been chosen as defensive weapons of choice for women. They became so popular, and powerful, that the length of the pins were outlawed in the early 1900s in numerous US cities.

About Pinned By Pearls: Why These Gemstones?

Pearls were chosen specifically to represent the movement because they represent a single sand grain can form something so unique and beautiful. Taking the movement’s pledge is just one step towards making changes for women in Hollywood and women in the entertainment industry as a whole.

About Pinned By Pearls: Why Vintage Pearl Pins?

Vintage pins were chosen to represent the movement because of their sustainability and historical symbolism. Through the connection of history, these pins allow us to honor the battle for sexual equality that women having been long fighting for in America.

Plus, this is a way for celebrities to support the movement, while limiting their ecological footprint on society. This is yet one more way to make new uses for old items, shedding light on eco-friendly jewelry pieces that actually bring value to the lives of others.

The Reasons Behind the Pinned By Pearls Movement

There are two main reasons this movement is becoming so popular with Hollywood’s elite, including celebrity men:

  1. Bring attention to the wage gap between men and women in film
  2. Put an end to sexual harassment and sexual assaults in the film industry

Today, there still a huge wage gap when it comes to the women and men of Hollywood. Within the past 10 years, only 4% of the industry’s directors have been women.

And, most of us have seen one report or another alleging some form of sexual abuse and/or harassment by some of the top names in the industry… from James Franco to Bill Cosby, from Aziz Ansari to Justin Timberlake, from Russell Simmons to Harvey Weinstein.

Celebrity men across the country are taking notice of such injustices against women. And, that is what movements like Times Up and Pinned By Pearls are all about in 2018.

Celebrity Men Wearing Pearls Created by Awesome Women

With more and more sexual abuse allegations being reported, the chatter about sexual assault and harassment won’t die down anytime soon. As a matter of fact, conversations are expanding in efforts to help men understand just how horrifying this all is for women victims.

Both actresses and actors showed their support for the movement by wearing Time’s Up pins at the 2018 Golden Globes, with women going even further… wearing all black. Now, the Pinned By Pearls movement is expected to become even popular with celebrity men donning the red carpet this year.

This vintage pearl hat pin was created specifically for men, so they can proudly tuck the jewelry pieces into their lapels. Those who wear them are showing their support for the projects created by women and starring women.

The movement is also about the wage gap and other inequalities between men and women in film, including the types of roles available and the awards given for those roles. During the 2018 Golden Globes, Natalie Portman gave a speech that rang across the world as she and Ron Howard presented the Best Director Award of the year:

“And here are the all-male nominees.”
