Tie Waist Jackets

Belted jackets tied around the waist were one of the most profound trends seen on the MFW runway this season. A simple, yet statement making piece you can easily slot into your wardrobe. They came sashaying down in mid lengths and long lengths, tightly tied or loosely belted for both a formal and informal vibe. The best styles were cut from light cotton, perfect for the Spring to Autumn weather and many versatile colour palettes. We particularly loved the tailored yet sporty feel from the belted jackets at Daniel W Fletcher.

Mid Wash Denim

Each season denim takes on a new form and this time it’s the turn of the mid wash. After many years of deconstructed and distressed styles dominating the runways, the mid wash provides a fresh, more clean breath of fresh denim air. Mid washed denim achieves a more uniform colour on the fabric, not quite true Americana blue but not far off either! Many jeans took on a 70’s style silhouette with loose fit and shirts to match. Oliver Spencer styled his mid wash jeans with smart lace up shoes and bomber jackets in both long pant and cropped short versions.

Vertical Stripes

Vertical stripes were a clean contrast to the many chaotic and eclectic prints that dominated this years MFW. Many designers such as Songzio chose to show full suits in thick blue pin stripes while others kept theirs subtler with only a hint of pin stripe on a shirt. To avoid looking like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins, we suggest keeping your colours low key if you want to embrace the full head to toe stripe or go bold with just a statement striped suit jacket.

Tonal Outfits

A trend borrowed from staple European women’s wear dressing, full tonal outfits are a key trend for Menswear this Autumn/Winter. Choosing only one colour, designers created full outfits by blending multiple tones and shades. To make this look really sing, you need to be a fan of layering to get the full effect. Two versions of this tonal trend stood out, the first being shades of pastels like mint and salmon to complement another trend; gender fluidity and the second, vibrant popping colours like canary yellow, referencing the ever growing athleisure trend. Phoebe English sent an eye catching red ensemble down the runway, comprised of loose fitting sweatpants, shirt and knitwear while Xander Zhou’s dark mint utility jumpsuit harked at the opposite end of the spectrum.

1990’s Streetwear

The 90’s have been resurging for a while now within womenswear with the return of the choker, dark lips and dare we say it, even skorts! Now it’s menswear’s turn to revamp the trends of 1990 and they’ve gone down the streetwear line. Camo printed loose trousers with pops of neon colour, deconstructed hoodies and even padded body warmers created a scene this season. There’s no room for dipping your toes with this trend, it’s all or nothing when it comes to pulling this look into your repertoire.

Gender No’s

Fluidity within gender has risen fast this year. Many pieces seen on the runway had little or no gender, with menswear embracing floral blouses, skirts and even a few dresses. But it wasn’t just the silhouette that changed for menswear. Fabrics that would normally be considered overtly feminine such as lace and silk were cajoled into becoming menswear appropriate. While we can’t see dresses becoming a staple in every man’s wardrobe, if it’s going to take off anywhere, it’s going to be London!
