3 Delicious & Nutritious Ways to Upgrade your Water Game

For whatever reason, most people just don’t drink enough water. FACT. This in turn can have a negative effect on pretty much every part of the body, from causing headaches, reducing concentration, and even prematurely ageing the skin. As such, we’ve come up with three great recipes to upgrade your water game this summer, to ensure you’re better hydrated than SpongeBob Squarepants, himself.

What is it

A lot of people claim they don’t like water, but in terms of hydration, there’s no other liquid that does a better job; tea and coffee are both diuretics, which increases the loss of water from the body; carbonated drinks are nearly always full of sugar, and if not, full of chemicals that are often even worse; and fruit juices are highly acidic and therefore should only be consumed in moderation.

Fruit infused water on the other hand, is incredibly easy to prepare, adds a refreshing twist to what arguably isn’t the most exciting flavour in the world, and helps to get a few vital vitamins into your diet throughout the day. Simply get yourself a jug, pitcher or jar, and you’re good to go!

Recipe 1 - Berries and sage

Handful of blackberries
Handful of blueberries
Handful of raspberries
Sage
Ice
Large jug of water

Muddle the sage at the bottom of the jar to release the flavours. With regard to the fruit, you can find a packet of frozen berries in most supermarkets, which works great for this recipe as you can just chuck it in and forego the ice. Failing that, fresh berries and ice will work just fine. Once it's all in, place the mixture in the fridge to infuse for at least a couple of hours, and then enjoy.

Tasting like a refined version of Ribena, this berries and sage concoction is brimming with good ol’ vitamin C, as well providing healthy doses of dietary fibre, iron, magnesium and potassium.

Recipe 2 – Strawberry, watermelon and rosemary

Small punnet of strawberries
Half a watermelon
Rosemary
Ice
Large jug of water

Muddle the rosemary to release the flavours. Halve the strawberries, and dice the watermelon, before throwing it all into the jar. Fill with ice and then pour water into the gaps, before placing it in the fridge to infuse.

A refreshing cocktail of vitamin A and C, this gorgeous summer infusion is the perfect way to cool down on a warm afternoon. The fact that it also helps to fortify the immune system just happens to be an added bonus!

Recipe 3 – Virgin Pimms

1 orange
1 lemon
1 lime
Quarter cucumber
Mint
Ice
Large jug of water

Once again, the first step is to crush the mint at the bottom of the jug. Cut the orange, lemon, and lime into quarters, and place them into the pitcher along with the diced cucumber. Fill the jug with ice, and then pour in the water to the top. Stir it all together, and then as before, stick it in the fridge to infuse.

Like a Pimms without the Pimms (or hangover!), this infusion if full of vitamin C, which is great for keeping flu away, maintaining healthy looking skin, and assisting in the absorption of iron.

Needless to say, you’re free to eat the fruit afterwards with all these recipes, or even refill the jars for a second round of tasty infusion.
