Importance of Sleep

We hear it from the time we are kids, our parents and teachers repeated it over and over...make sure you get some sleep!

Experts recommend about 8 hours of sleep per night in order to allow your body to fully recover from the day's activity and to repair itself so that you are prepared both mentally and physically for the next day.  Makes sense right?  I am sure you have noticed your performance struggling anytime you have had a bad night's sleep.  One bad night here and there isn't that big of a deal, your body is an amazing machine and knows how to adjust.  However, if you make getting a terrible night's sleep a normal part of your routine you are asking for trouble.

Lack of sleep has been linked to things such as depression, anxiety, dampening of problem solving skills, lack of productivity, lethargy, decreased motivation, and aging.  Let's put science aside for a minute and just think on a basic level.  Think back to a time where you weren't sleeping well, do you remember being affected negatively at all?  I know it can have a huge impact on me when I don't get enough sleep.  Bodybuilding is a huge part of my life and getting plenty of sleep is essential in order to continue to grow and improve my body day in and day out.  Any professional bodybuilder will tell you that the 3 most important things in the sport are Diet, Training Intensity, and plenty of REST!  When I have a bad night's sleep a few days in a row I can feel it and see it in my training.  I won't be able to use certain loads that I can usually handle, I will lose reps on certain exercises, and my desire to be in the gym will be extremely low and I find myself simply just working out so that I can go home.

A good night's sleep is essential because when we sleep we release a large amount of human growth hormone or HGH.  HGH is responsible for many things including lean muscle to fat ratio, youthful skin, faster metabolism, more energy, anti-aging, stronger bones, faster muscle recovery from workouts, and a host of other benefits.  By not sleeping you are truly damaging and limiting your body's potential.  HGH is the key to youth and is something that should not be taken for granted.  Why limit your potential and not take advantage of such a spectacular hormone that your body naturally produces?  Do yourself a favor and start setting a sleep schedule and sticking to it.  Your body will thank you!
