If you follow me on Instagram, you saw me attempt a seven-day Athleisure Capsule Wardrobe challenge. I picked out seven pieces of mostly athleisure items to wear for a full week. This idea came from Alyse Mason Brill, the boss babe behind SweatPink/Fit Approach. She did hers for 10 days, but I just…couldn’t. I know my limitations, but I’m also chasing some simplicity.
For the seven days, I chose:
- A wrap dress I bought at the Ann Taylor outlet. This wasn’t strictly athleisure. However, a lot of the athleisure companies make beautiful dresses that can be dressed up or down, but not in petite sizes. I’m 5’1″.
- The lavender PrAna t-shirt I bought at BlogFest in July.
- A black Calia by Carrie Underwood skort.
- The PrAna Harlene top in a black-and-white chevron stripe.
- A floaty Athleta tank top.
- Athleta Metro shorts in black. They’re so comfortable, and they look like real shorts.
- PrAna Briann pants in gray. They feel like leggings. They also come in a short inseam.
Lessons from the Athleisure Capsule Wardrobe
First of all, I never expected to get into athleisure. For a really long time, I thought of it as the people who wear yoga pants everywhere. I didn’t expect to find such cute pieces! The Metro shorts really look like regular shorts, and they’re so comfortable I could (and did) take a nap in them. All the tops felt great and fit perfectly into my entrepreneur/work from home/mom life. Finally, when the weather cools down, those PrAna pants are going to be a wardrobe staple.
However, I don’t like dresses. Or skirts. I feel overdressed in them. Granted, I wear dresses to church and when I have to meet with my kids’ teachers or other business professionals. But I hate them otherwise. I coveted the PrAna Berry dress, but I knew it would be too long. I realized I need an athleisure dress that I can wear with flat sandals or tights and boots. I’m open to suggestions for something that isn’t too long for my short self.
Also, I honestly can’t do a full Capsule Wardrobe. I felt like I had to do an extra load of laundry because, thanks to the Houston heat and humidity, I sweated all over my shirts. Even when I travel, I bring one shirt per day. However, I did like limiting my choices. I didn’t get back from the gym and wonder what I would wear (especially the last day)!
My big takeaway from this challenge is that I can absolutely wear athleisure. It helps when the pants and shorts look like “real” pants and shorts, and it also helps that PrAna and Athleta offer such cute tops. I have a feeling I’m going to wear those PrAna pants a lot this winter. I’m still in search of the perfect athleisure dress, the one that’s going to take me to teacher meetings, church, and a new Toastmasters group.
