How to Soothe Sore Muscles (Tart Cherry Switchel)

Maybe you work out a lot, or maybe you did something you’re not used to doing and then all of a sudden you notice: Oh! My muscles are really sore!

We’ve all been there at one time or another, but fear not, I have something that very well may put those muscles at ease.

Try this Tart Cherry Switchel, which can help soothe those aches and get you back to doing life.

So what exactly is a switchel? If you haven’t already checked out our maple ginger switchel or glowing green switchel, a switchel is a drink that originated back in the 18th century to hydrate farmers during long days in the fields.

A basic switchel contains Apple Cider Vinegar, ginger, maple syrup, and water, plus a little citrus to sweeten it up.

Water is essential to our bodies, so of course when you’ve been working out, or doing something strenuous that causes sore muscles, it’s important to hydrate and flush out toxins. The apple cider vinegar works with the water to cleanse your system, which will fast-track you to feeling better.

How to Soothe Sore Muscles

Fresh ginger has potent anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it quite effective at reducing pain, and tart cherry juice has both anti-inflammatory properties as well as many antioxidants, which can help protect muscles pre-workout in addition to easing pain post-workout.

We also switched out the maple syrup for blackstrap molasses to bump the magnesium content. Since many people are already magnesium-deficient, and sweating causes additional magnesium loss, adding it back in with blackstrap molasses can keep muscles cramps at bay.

In the end, you have the perfect drink to not only hydrate, but help ease muscle soreness.

Throw all the ingredients in a large, tight-lidded jar and shake them up, then let it sit in the fridge so the flavors can mingle and intensify. Put pour some over ice after a workout and you’re on the way to happy, healthy muscles once more.
