No wonder Rob English’s frames are highly regarded by the weight-weenie community: they blend slender good looks with steel — and are a great ride, too. Stefan’s a returning English customer and achieved his goal of a 5.44kg final build weight with this version.

Returning customers of English are no wonder, either. The engineering of Rob’s frames is intriguing and mesmerising. He obviously did such a pleasing job with this frame that Stefan came back for an attempt at a personal featherweight title.

For such a lightweight frame, Rob’s choice of material was Reynold’s stainless steel 953, whose butted tubes can be drawn to a thickness of 0.3mm, while still producing a strong and resilient riding frame.

An alluring peek of ENVE carbon fibre was installed as the head tube, connecting the frame to the components. It’s not just for looks: Stefan’s geometry required a taller tube, it provides sufficient strength and a small weight reduction.

A 299g Easton fork headlines the act, the drivetrain is a Lightning crankset with Extralite rings, a Berk saddle is up top along with a Darimo cockpit and it’s all rounded out with Farsports rims and Extralite hubs.

The English Cycles workshop in Eugene, Oregon, has been right in the midst of the wildfires that have been ravaging the state recently but this frame, like it’s local builder, will prove to be tougher than any adversity thrown at it.
