Today is the most talked about day of love ever, so a shout out to my main squeeze: the Brooks Running Launch 5! I’ve been running in these for a few weeks already, so thought I’d give you a full review on what I think about them… mostly because shoes are the MOST important thing when it comes to running (and staying healthy).
Back story: I used to run in the Nike Air Pegasus and one day, someone thought it would be fun to completely change the profile of the shoe so it went from neutral and cushioned to very minimalist with little support. I ended up getting shin splints so bad that I was sidelined for almost two months. It was awful.
I bounced around to different shoes for awhile, with some causing IT band issues and others just not jiving well with my body/running habits. I ended up falling in love with the Glycerins from Brooks Running back in 2011 and have been running in them ever since. Over the past year or so, I started running in the Launch periodically… mostly for speedwork and then gradually started adding them for marathons.
Since the Launch 5 dropped, though, I’ve been running in them pretty exclusively! I am so jazzed for this because I love these shoes for a number of reasons… but in honor of Valentine’s Day, let me share my top 5.
1. They are light!
It’s so hard to find a shoe for a neutral runner that is light… often times, these end up being your boxy, ugly running shoes because shoe companies do not know what to do with them. These weigh in at 7.5 ounces, which feels awesome when you’re used to running in a lot heavier shoe.
2. Springy and cushioned
I am a heel striker and really heavy on my feet (sometimes I wonder how I don’t fall through floors), so having cushioning is so important to me… and I love that you get this with the Launch 5. They also give you the support you need for high arches, which used to be a problem for me with old running shoes.
3. There’s a nice midsole drop
When the whole barefoot/minimalist running thing came out a few years ago, I was excited… until I realized that was probably the worst thing for my body as a heel striker. I love that Brooks didn’t tack on to that trend and ditch the midsole drop in this shoe — it’s at 10mm, which works perfect for me.
4. Air mesh upper
The Air Mesh Upper feels like air conditioning on your feet, and I love it. Especially since, because of the cold weather here in Minneapolis, I am confined to treadmill running, which means warm gyms. The air mesh upper gives you breathability (without sacrificing how the shoe looks, too!).
5. Beautiful colors
Let’s face it, colors matter when it comes to running shoes! I absolutely love the color patterns that Brooks has come out for this shoe, especially the tie dye one!
There you have it… my shoe review for the Launch 5 from Brooks Running!
