Welcome 2018 + this year’s goals

So far, we’ve made it through the first day of 2018 and it’s been pretty solid, so maybe that’s a sign this will be a good year? Totally kidding.

The past few years, I’ve been following a theme of having it be the “year of XYZ” and I’m planning to do the same this year. I must admit, I was struggling a bit with what I wanted to Focus on. I’ve focused on changing a lot of things in life over the past few years to make it better and get to a better place, and I feel like I’m in that place. Not saying that I don’t have anything to work on, but it makes it a lot tougher to figure out what needs to change when you feel so content/in the right place in life.

That being said, I’m making 2018 the year of balance. I have been really bad at this the past few weeks, and it’s always been a weakness of mine. For one, I really like to do all the things and be involved in all the stuff, and I tend to get really bad FOMO. So, I’ll overschedule and overpromise and end up being very stressed out (which isn’t fun for anyone).

I think I had a little bit of a wakeup call with this when I was going to the chiropractor and she was telling me how I needed to focus on self-care, and I kept failing at it, week after week, because I said I didn’t have time. Self-care is the most important thing that you can do for yourself, and I’m saying I don’t have time for that thing. This will change in 2018.

In addition to proclaiming it the year of balance, I have five big goals that I’m focused on this year (similar to 2017… and some of these goals will actually stay the same!).

1. Try something new every month

I LOVE having this as a goal… I’ve been able to experience so many cool, new things by doing it, and I want to make sure this is still a focus. I feel like if I don’t have it on the list, it’ll be a “when I get to it” and I think this one is so important.

2. Read 15 books in 2018

I’m modifying this one a little bit… last year, I hit my goal of reading 12 books (one per month) and I think I can definitely up that number a little bit, especially as I focus on balancing my hobbies a little better (and maybe learning how to not get sucked into the blackhole that is the internet…).

3. Get my age of money to 60 days

Last year, I had a similar goal… to get my age of money to 45 days. (Don’t know what I mean by this? Check out THIS blog post.) I started at 15 days in January 27 and now I’m kicking off the year at 35 days. I feel like I can definitely double this throughout this year and know that YNAB will help get me there.

4. Go for a marathon PR at the Philadelphia Marathon

This terrifies me to say this. SO MUCH. I feel like going anything less than a 3:28 is under reach for me; but also looking at how underprepared I was at the Indianapolis Marathon, I know that I probably have more in me. I am planning to run the Philadelphia Marathon in November this year, and my goal is to have this be a PR. This means I need to put in a lot of work between now and then, but I know I can do it.

5. Go for a mile PR

I last ran a Mile Race (if you don’t count the Beer Mile) in 2012, and my PR stands at 6:31 for this race. Minneapolis has a mile race in May, and I think I would be set up for success since I’ll be coming off of Boston training and rolling into training for my next marathon (more on that later this week)… so I feel like I’d be in prime shape to do this. This is also slightly terrifying. But, if it doesn’t scare you, you aren’t doing it right, right? Something like that anyways.

BONUS GOAL: Get a bigger musky

Not that Mitch isn’t good enough, but I’d love to get a 50″+ musky. I feel like this isn’t totally in my control (well, and maybe I should get better at fishing so I can not lose so many this year… hahaha).

So there you have it! A year focused on balance, PRs and some of my favorite hobbies. I’m so excited to see what 2018 has to bring!

If you were to give 2018 ONE WORD, what would it be? What are some of the goals you are focusing on?
