Looking back at 2017 [year in review]

And just like that, we’re in 2018! I hope you guys had an awesome time ringing in the new year.

2017 flew by so fast, I can’t even believe it. But also feel like I say this at the end of every single year now.

It was a GREAT year for Running. I already shared my year in running a few weeks ago, but as I count up my miles for the year, I want to celebrate my favorite runs of the year. There were a lot of them, so making this list was pretty tough to narrow down.

Before I get to that, let’s chat about my other goals that I had this year.

Set a PR in the half marathon and 5k: Definitely didn’t come close to this for the 5k (I don’t know why I torture myself with goals like this since I hate that distance, almost more than the 10k). However, I rocked a new-old PR in the half Marathon (tied my previous PR time down to the second). I don’t know how this keeps happening.

Try something new every month: This is one of my favorite goals, and one that I will definitely continue in 2018. I rocked this one out of the park if I do say so myself. My favorite new things that I tried this year: blood lactate test // muskie fishing // beer mile // goat yoga // running my first ultra marathon

Read one book a month: I FINALLY accomplished this one, and this is another one that I’m bringing back in 2018. I posted about my favorite five books HERE if you’re interested!

Strength train at least two times a week: I would give myself a solid B in this. It is still a work in progress, but I definitely have improved on strength training overall… I can definitely see a difference when I am strength training and when I don’t.

Get my age of money up to 45 days: I started using YNAB about a year and a half ago (read more HERE) and one of the things that they track is your age of money. At the beginning of the year, I was at 15 days and I’m happy to say that I finished the year at 35 days! Even though I didn’t hit my goal, I’m pumped with hitting 35 days.

And now on to the running! This month was also a low mileage month… between settling into a new job, making all of the excuses for not running in cold weather and sleeping through alarms, I didn’t get a ton of running in. Which I’m okay with, because this month ramps up Boston Marathon training and I’d prefer to go into it rested and healthy, even if that means a little out of shape.

I totaled 57.64 miles for December, which makes my total for the year 1,618 miles! I’m super proud of this (this is the first time I’ve counted miles for the year) and it also means that I can make it from Minneapolis to San Francisco!

Where did all of these miles come from? Well, I had some great running adventures this year, including:

Running around Minneapolis

Whether it’s -10 degrees or a perfect 55 degrees for running, I am SO lucky to live in Minneapolis and have access to all the amazing trails that we have.

Albuquerque: Trail Running & Hitting the Track

I was lucky enough to go on an amazing trip with Brooks Running in March to Albuquerque, where we hit the trails and did some awesome track running with the Brooks Beasts and their coaches. This was my first official foray into trail running and it was a blast.

My fifth Boston Marathon

The race was terrible itself (I did not adjust for the weather), but I absolutely LOVE the experience of running Boston. It’s always incredible.

Las Vegas Strip

I’ll be the first person to tell you that I hate Las Vegas (not my scene), but when I went out there for work in 2017, I had an awesome time running on the strip. When you go out at 6 a.m., it transforms into a runner’s paradise and I made some new friends along the way, which is always fun.

Grandma’s Marathon!

I ran my second Grandma’s Marathon in 2017 and got an awesome PR! Of course this is one of my rave runs for 2017… plus, check out these amazing views! (This was not during the race, but actually when we were headed to the buses.)

Nerstrand State Park in Minnesota

We went camping to Nerstrand State Park in Minnesota and went for a trail run. Our end? These beautiful waterfalls. It was well worth the trek.

Paavo Nurmi Marathon

I signed up for this race somewhat on a whim, and I’m so happy I did. It is a hard course, and I was in the midst of training for the Golden Ultra so I didn’t go for a PR. I chatted with a fellow runner nearly the entire race, and it was such a great distraction and training tool.

The Golden Ultra

Looking back at these pictures, I still can’t believe that THIS HAPPENED. The Golden Ultra was phenomenal — definitely the toughest race of my life, but man, it was something that has forever changed me as a person.

Indianapolis Monumental Marathon

This marathon and course shocked me. I did not think I’d enjoy it as much as I did, or have as much success as I did (an AWESOME PR!)… so of course, this belongs on my list of rave runs in 2017!

Interstate State Park in Wisconsin

My legs were still dead from the Indianapolis Marathon // Golden Ultra, but this trail run was one of my favorites (even if my legs weren’t working). It was a perfect late fall day to enjoy the trails and get out in nature.

Overall, 2017 was one of my favorite years in a long time. It was filled with a lot of my favorite things, people and places. I am so excited to see what happens next in 2018. And, more on my goals on the blog tomorrow!

What did you love most about 2017? Any rave runs that you’d share?
