Can integrations keep NetSuite users from fleeing?

Earlier this month, Aneel Bhusri, co-founder and CEO of Workday, indicated that Oracle’s acquisition of Netsuite could have NetSuite users fleeing the software. Naturally, since Workday is a NetSuite competitor, Bhusri is hoping former NetSuite users will flock to Workday. He cited low customer satisfaction from Oracle as a reason for possible defection.

Of note right here: Workday is best suited for medium and large enterprises. So if there is a defection to another system, it’s unlikely that SMBs will choose Workday when options like Microsoft Dynamics and SAP Business One exist.

However, that doesn’t seem to be stopping other companies from creating NetSuite integrations. Affirm, the financial products company started by PayPal Co-Founder Max Levchin, announced that it would integrate into Oracle Commerce and NetSuite SuiteCommerce. Affirm basically helps consumers find payment options, so it’s suited for retailers that sell big-ticket items.

Keep in mind that the acquisition is still relatively new, and how it plays out for NetSuite users could go both ways. On one hand, NetSuite could be folded into Oracle products. However, that strategy flopped for other software companies; even SAP now keeps its acquisitions under their old brand names. On the other hand, NetSuite could continue to receive the same support – or better – than it did before Oracle purchased it.

Companies are still using NetSuite – and still signing on the dotted line for new implementations, or proceeding with implementations that they had already been undertaking before the Oracle acquisition. Even Quicken, when it broke away from Intuit to become an independent entity, chose NetSuite.

Ultimately, for current users, listening to comments from the CEO of a competing company isn’t going to do any good. What’s worth watching are the big-name NetSuite implementations. Who’s choosing NetSuite now? Can you get customer references if you’re planning to go with NetSuite? If you’re planning to leave NetSuite, do you have a good business case?

NetSuite appears to still be going strong, and a wait and see approach seems to be the best one.
