As I am sure most Small Business Owners do, I spend way too much time on social media. At the moment my poison of choice is Instagram. This leads to my journey as to how I got 400 likes on new Instagram Page. More specifically, I got 400 likes on a single photo on an Instagram (happy dance). All within 24 hours of creating the page. I spend my time on Social Media trying to get as much exposure as possible for the Small Businesses that I feature. Last week, I was stalking some other Instagram pages, and was amazed and how many likes some pages with small followings had. I was shocked that they were managing to reach so many people, so it got me thinking.
How do you get people to like your Instagram photos? How can I get heaps and heaps of likes on my Instagram photos? I saw some pages with less followers than me, with a whole heap more likes on some of their photos. I then noticed that not all of their photos had lots of likes. This made me wonder how they did it.
Following the steps in my recent blog post on research, I started to research how to get more likes. I found some great articles, a lot talking about increasing your organic reach. To be honest, at this point I didn’t care what type of reach it was. I just wanted to increase the reach. It was a sham page, so I didn’t mind what kind of people liked the photo, I just wanted likes. I wanted to experiment and see how many likes I could get on my new sham Instagram page.
My research journey lead me to the app store. I found literally hundreds of Apps centred around increasing your likes and following on Instagram, so I started downloading them.
Using Apps to Gain Likes
I downloaded about 20 apps and signed up for them all, giving the details of my new sham account. Below is a photo some of the apps that I downloaded on my experimental adventure.
They were all free apps, because let’s face it I didn’t want to spend money on my little experiment. I then started working out how to get free likes and followers with each app. They all ran with the same basic principles: you dish out a whole heap of followers and then automatically a whole heap of accounts like and follow you back. You choose what images you want likes on. Instagram froze my ability to like things for a while, but the apps worked this out and just paused the likes for a while. All of the apps also offered packages where you simply pay money to get extra likes or followers. I wasn’t that desperate, but hey, I am sure some people have done this.
Within a few hours of creating my account, I had over 100 followers and over 400 likes on one of my photos. Within less than 24 hours, I have over 400 likes on a new Instagram Page. (this is more likes than any of my other Instagram accounts have received). This one photo gives reason to how I got over 400 likes on a new Instagram page.
Despite having so many likes though, it didn’t boost my images to the top of any of the hashtags. It didn’t help them gain any exposure. It just made me feel fab about the fact that heaps of robots out there on Instagram had liked my photo.
A week on, with some minimal posting, I now have 83 followers. Other posts that I haven’t cheated on have received around 50 likes (using the right hashtags and posting at the right times). I still have over 400 likes on one of my photos though, yippee!
What this taught me, is that it isn’t always reliable to compare your account with others. You don’t necessarily know how they have gone about getting likes on your photos. It also taught me that aside from making you look more popular than you are, cheating doesn’t really achieve anything. Some people may not consider this cheating, but it is the best way that I can describe it.
At the end of the day, the way I managed to get a crazy boost of over 400 likes in less than 24 hours on a photo on a brand new Instagram account was to cheat and use apps that automatically gave me likes and followers. I would love to know what your thoughts are on methods such as this. Do you consider it cheating? Or is it just another way to help boost your profiles?
Hey, even if my experiment was all just a big batch of cheating to get likes, it was a lot of fun. I am proud to say though, that our Small Biz Shout Page (www.instagram.com/smallbizshout) is growing amazingly thank you to all of the amazing small business owners that are on our journey with us. That is without even cheating
Some pearls of wisdom this made me think of were:
Never compare your chapter one to someone else’s chapter 10; and
Never judge a book by its cover.
