FOUNDED in 2013 by Oliver Bridge, Cornerstone is a retailer and deliverer of razor blades and shaving supplies for men.
Inspired by everything from his aversion to skin rashes from shaving to shopping for shaving products, Oliver’s master plan was for an online service offering a wide variety of men’s toiletries and quality razors, that would be delivered to the client’s front door.
Cornerstone allows its customers to cancel, pause, or change their deliveries at any time. And even though there is fierce competition with major international brands, Cornerstone has struck a chord with UK men.
To date, more than 37,500 customers having signed up, at a growth rate of 5 percent each week—it seems that Cornerstone is on track to be a major player in this sector.
Recently we ushered Oliver into the AGENT Startup Hotseat where he answered questions about his startup story to date.
1. Very simply, what does your company do?
We sell men’s shaving products over the internet on a flexible subscription model – making it easier to get a smoother, more comfortable shave.
2. What was the ‘Eureka!’ moment?
Standing in the queue in Boots, wasting my lunch break. I just thought there had to be a more convenient way to buy grooming products like razors, shave gels, etc.
3. What were you doing before starting?
I used to work for a venture capital firm and became really inspired by how e-commerce was transforming some industries. I’d always suffered with shaving—finding it quite uncomfortable, and it struck me that it was time for a better solution!
4. How are you funded?
We’re crowdfunded but we’ve also had some investment from angel investors.
5. What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs starting their own company?
Know what you’re letting yourself in for, it’s a lot of hard work!
6. What item would you never leave the house without?
I can’t say it’s an object, but I’d never leave the house without having shaved.
