Sanjivani Bhide’s journey as a professional home baker started in August 2010 with the launch of her home baking venture Sweet Picks by Sanjivani. In earlier times, baking was a hobby for her. The hobby gradually transformed into a serious passion later on. Sanjivani is an extremely creative person and her creativity reflects in each and every product which she bakes. Today, in this session, the lady herself is here with us to tell us her story!
Hi Sanjivani, welcome to conflatingVisions. Please tell us a few lines about yourself.
Hello! This is Sanjivani, founder, head baker and Cake decorator of Sweet Picks by Sanjivani. I am married and a Mommy to a 3-year-old little brat, Iraa. My husband, Chandragupta plays a pivotal role in my caking career as the whole idea would have remained just a dream without his support. I am also blessed with a super set of parents and in-laws who take turns to look after my daughter while I am away.
What inspires you to bake?
Pure love for baking and decorating is what inspires me every day.
When did you first baked something? What was it and how was the outcome?
I have always loved cooking . As a child, I used to pretend play as a chef hosting a cookery show (thanks to chef Sanjeev Kapoor & Khana Khazana). I don’t remember exactly when I first baked something, but I am sure the outcome must have been decent enough to be consumed.
Tell us about your venture Sweet Picks by Sanjivani.
Sweet Picks was born after I completed my diploma from IHM, Mumbai. I have baked a lot of cakes for family and friends but my first commercial order came in August 2010. What started as being a hobby baker at home has now grown into a decently big sized studio. We are now a team of 3. Sweet Picks only offers eggless bakes and desserts and delivers across Mumbai. Sweet Picks offers a wide variety of cakes and desserts to choose from. We specialise in customized theme cakes.
How important is creativity in baking profession?
Creativity is everything in the kind of the profession that I am into. We have to constantly come up with something new with every season. It takes a lot of experiments to come up with something new.
In what ways are you creative when it comes to baking?
Taste wise, I experiment a lot with flavour combinations. If I try some new combination and outcome is good then I try to push it to my clients. I always suggest my clients to try out flavours that are not common.
What are your signature items?
Chocolate and Caramel Cake, Walnut Brownies, Blueberry cheesecake, Whole Wheat chocolate muffins.
How do you go about building a successful customer base?
Social media plays the most important role in showcasing products and getting new customers. We are registered on Zomato and have presence on Facebook. I haven’t tried any other common marketing strategies to reach more customers. Once a new client comes in, the only way to get them to stay is to deliver excellent cakes each and every time.
Narrate some of your success stories.
Recently, we did an 81st anniversary cake of the reputed Ad agency Leo Burnett. We had been recommended by someone. Their only brief was to make the best cake I could! We received raving reviews for that cake.
What are your future plans with Sweet Picks by Sanjivani?
Plans are big! We want Sweet Picks to be in everybody’s minds when they think of cakes. And of course, a bigger client base, even bigger space and better infrastructure.
Please share some tips and techniques for the budding baking artists…
Please do a baking course from a good school. A strong base marks the foundation of a good building. And, never stop learning. There’s so much to learn!
And, one last question of this session, if you have had one wish…
I want to complete all three levels of an advance Patisserie course from Le Cordon Blue, Paris.
