England and Wales councils have said that false beauticians who offer unproductive Teeth Whitening services and those who sell illegal kits are supposed to face tough penalties.
The Local Government Association has said that in some kits, you will find they have 300 times the allowed Hydrogen Peroxide Limit.
The LGA added that this can be likened to brushing your Teeth using bleach and can cause burns, blistering and other damages.
The govt informed that it was sensitizing people of the risks involved but did not say whether it was planning to enact bigger fines.
It is the dental professionals that are allowed to perform teeth Whitening but LGA is worried by the increasing number of unqualified individuals who offer the treatment.
In one area, Warwickshire, the LGA said the county council seized more than 15,000 “dangerous”‘ teeth whitening products between May 2015 and February 2016.
The legal Hydrogen Peroxide limit that is allowed for public use is 0.1% but some kits had up to 33%, which even goes far past the 6% limit for professionals.
The Health Department said that more than 6% application by individual who lack professional training may encounter dangers to teeth and gums.
The General Dental Council has been successful in prosecuting numerous unqualified practioners who offer dental services.
“Illegal DIY teeth whitening kits may promise fast results and a brighter smile but those containing dangerous levels of hydrogen peroxide are the equivalent of brushing with bleach and can put oral health at risk,” said the LGA’s Simon Blackburn.
32 people were prosecuted last year but the British Dental Association complains that the fines are minimal and that tougher sanctions should be imposed.
