China and US “Progress” on North Korea Sanctions

The US and China said that they have moved forward in drafting UN resolutions that seek to strengthen the North Korea Sanctions after they launched a rocket and also carried out nuclear test.

John Kerry, the US Secretary of State and Wang Yi, Foreign Minister in China, said that very soon a draft could be availed for it to be approved.

Even though China condemns the actions by North Korea, the country has always been keen not to endorse sanctions that could affect the stability of its neighbor. The recent sanctions on North Korea have not played so well for them in terms of economic stability.

In their rocket launch in February, the UN condemned the actions saying that it was a violation of the UN resolutions. An emergency UN Security Council meeting was called in which the world powers agreed to make the sanctions tougher.

Unforeseen resolution

Mr. Wang told the media that they had progressed in consulting as well as coming up with the possible ways in which they could draft a resolution and pass it in future.

In addition, Mr. Kerry stated that once the approval of the draft resolution has been met, it will be much better than any other draft that the UN has ever passed in the past.

North Korea on the other hand has maintained that it launched a satellite and that its space programme is used for scientific purposes. However, its ally China as well as other countries such as South Korea and the US insists that these kinds of rocket launches can be used to create inter-continental ballistic missiles.

A few hours after the launch was made, South Korea made it known that it had intentions of starting discussions with the United States so that a missile defense system could be deployed in the country to counter the threat that their neighbor posed.

North begun its nuclear tests in 2006 and the one it carried out in January this year was its fourth. The country still holds that it was testing on a hydrogen bomb technology. Several experts are skeptical that North Korea is able to create a nuclear weapon that has a size which can fit on a missile.

There are analysts who say that Kim Jong-un may be using the tests to establish his authority even as he waits for a landmark party congress that will happen later this year.
