The Samsung Galaxy S8 Smartphone Unveiled!

After having undergone 12 months of traumatizing moments as its phones exploded and the stock price plummeted, Samsung is now set to turn around its fortunes around with its latest flagship smartphone – the Galaxy S8.

The Korean based firm held a press conference in New York where it unveiled the new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus that comes with a 6.2 inch screen. Just as we have come accustomed to Samsung, the two devices will feature edge-to-edge curved display or better said – the infinity display.

No more Home Button

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus marks a new era for Samsung by becoming the firm’s first devices to kill the physical Home Button. As a replacement, the home button is now built in the screen and will operate on the basis of pressure-sensitive hardware and software.

In addition, S8 has a facial recognition and iris recognition capability to help users unlock their smartphones more securely. This technology makes up for the decision to relocate the fingerprint scanner to the back.

The front-facing camera comes in 8MP and has face detecting autofocus technology, although using the same sensor and lens found in the S7.

The Next Siri, better batteries

Besides making adjustments to the physical home button and shifting the fingerprint scanner to the back, Samsung has introduced for the very first its own Bixby – a competitor to Apple’s Siri.

Bixby – your personal assistant – is integrated into the camera and will be able to do things such as images search, visual search, help with online shopping and identification of landmarks. It will also make app suggestions depending on your location and time of the day as it continues to learn your habits overtime.

The 2016 S7 Edge had bigger batteries, one of the things that make a change in the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. However, the two devices include both the wireless and wired fast charging capability.

According to DJ Koh, Samsung’s head of mobile business, these are just part of the yet to be seen offerings the firm has in store. He highlighted Samsung’s success with the VR technology, besides many other top-notch tech projects.

Digging deeper into the S8 exposes the 10nm processor, smaller and more efficient chipset than its predecessor. Whereas all the other S8 come with Samsung’s own Exynos chips, the US version features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835.

The Headphone is still there!

If you expected Samsung to eradicate the headphone jack like Apple did with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, then you were wrong. The S8 and S8+ still come with the 3.5mm connector and within the box you will find a set of AKG headphones.

The starting price for the S8 is $750 while the S8 Plus begins at $850, both of whom will first go on sale on April 21.

The Galaxy S8 measures 148.9 x 68.1 x 8.0 mm ( 5.86 x 2.68 x 0.31-inch), 155g (5.36oz) while its bigger brother has a size of 159.5 x 73.4 x 8.1 mm (6.00 x 3.09 x 0.31-inch), 173g (oz).

If you have encountered the S7, you will realize that Samsung managed to add 0.7 inches screen without tampering with the S7 size. But the bigger S8 has been increased in size, much bigger than the Galaxy S7 Edge. To achieve this, Samsung dramatically trimmed down the top and bottom bezels to create fascias which are now nearly all display.

Like we said in a past article, 2017 is Samsung’s year. The firm is going to prove that indeed it’s a tech giant.
