British Medical Journal argues that food should be fortified with Vitamin for a healthy growth in an individual’s life.
It is Not only having a role in an individual’s immunity but also vital for Healthy Bones. The infections data is not conclusive even though it does recommend supplements. Hence it should be taken for strong bones and muscles in the body.
Vitamin D is used by the immune system in the manufacture of antimicrobial weapons which drill holes in bacteria and viruses in the body to curb their spread.
Many people have low levels of Vitamin D especially during winter seasons. This is because it is made in the skin while the sun is out.
In order to get a definite answer, researchers had to pool data on 11,321 people from 25 separate trials. This was after trials on using supplements to prevent infections gave mixed results of various characteristics. The overall study dictated the chances of one person being spared for every 33 who took the Vitamin D supplements. That was more operational then the vaccination done against flu which was required to treat 40 people in order to prevent one case, in spite of flu being more serious than the common cold infecting people.
There were great differences for those patients who took pills daily or on weekly basis as compared to those who did it on a monthly basis or super-doses and in people who were deficient in the first place.
Why vitamin D is important
Its main role is to ensure the balance of calcium and phosphate in the body of an individual. These minerals are vital for the growth and maintenance of healthy bones, teeth and muscles in the body.
Low levels can lead to rickets in children where the bones soften and are weakened and misshapen as they continue to grow.
Deficiency of vitamin D in adults can lead to osteomalacia which end up causing severe pains in the bones and muscles.
Also high levels of vitamin D can lead to high levels of calcium in the blood which can cause heart and kidney problems.
