Dutch Justice Minister who took the seat after his predecessor stepped down due to a compensation payment to a convicted Drug Trafficker has resigned over the same scandal.
Ard van der Steur’s departure is being seen as a big blow to Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s government.
The recent opinion polls suggest that his centre-right Liberal Party (VVD) has fallen out of favor with most voters.
The Freedom Party, led by anti-immigration politician Geert Wilders, is leading public opinion polls, reports CNN.
Mr. Steur becomes the third member of the current government to resign as a result of the scandal.
The previous high-ranking officials to resign are Ivo Opstelten and his junior minister, Fred Teeven both of who, resigned in 2015 for having provided misleading information to parliament on the 2001 deal.
What’s the scandal all about?
The affair is about a $2.1 million deal that government prosecutors signed with drug trafficker Cees Helman.
The two Justice Ministers and one assistant have both been accused for the wrong answers given to parliament.
Mr van de Steur denied having advised the holding back of certain information.
But it is not only the leaders that are under scrutiny over the matter. Prime Minister Ruttte has equally been fiercely attacked by the opposition politicians.
